I would like to install a front mount IC in my wifes 85. I'm just getting ready to have the turbo rebuilt and would like to do it all at once. I've seen talk of Saab's and Volvo's but my concern is it must be installed without any cutting of the radiator support or anything welded to the car. Also I must retain the AC unit. From what I've seen in the JY's I think the Probe setup looks like the best fit to this point. Please remember I'm not looking for the absolute biggest and best flowing where as anything should be better than nothing at all. Should I Upgrade the turbo? Talk to me guys and Thank's to all. Rick B.

Rick,

I think by far the easiest one to install would be the old Ford Motorsport kit that was made by Spearco.
I put one of these kits on my car back in 1988 and I don't think it took more than an hour to install. Completely bolt-on, no cutting or welding required.
Spearco still has them available but in most people's opinion they are pretty expensive new from them.
I have seen quite a few of the old Motorsport kits in the last six months in the for-sale section.

Rick, I think the Probe is considered on the small side. It's better than nothing and if it meets your requirements, go for it. I don't think you want to upgrade to a bigger turbo and run it through the Probe.

BCA , Any idea or link to a Spearco site? If they are still availible, who may sell them?
Pete, The Probe IC appears to me to be larger than the stock 87/88 one. It does have what looks to be 2" inlet and outlet which is still a bit larger than the T3 outlet diameter? Do you know if it is a core restriction/flow problem or just it smaller physical size?
BCA, Can you tell me the aprox. dementions of the Motorsport unit?
Thanks again, Rick B.

Spearco also made the Ford Motorsport intercooler kit. Actually it is the same kit just a different name. Check the for sale sections here and at turboford.org . They pop up for sale fairly often. The Spearco kit was around $600. Turbonetics bought out Spearco and the prices have gone up and the quality of the piping and fit gone down. Spearco also makes a SVO kit that will fit. It will cool better but costs around $1200. A lot of people like the Conquest/Starion front mount. Both in/out on same side and flow well.

The intercooler is about 11"x11"x4" overall with a core size of 9" tall x 6" wide and 4" thick.

Hope this helps.

Is the GN intercooler better than a probe unit? I'm assuming it is, but what size are the inlet/outlet between the two? Anybody know? Later guys

It is much better. My friend has a 89 turbo trans am that runs 11's with the stock intercooler.
