It seems that they don't think to kindly of NATO over there. Some one posted about their light switch overheating and I said they should check out the light relays tech article over here. A jcassity said that was a dumb idea and called NATO some dumb ass name. Just go to show that it seems NATO has the best people still.

That's because the NATO tech article on 3G alternators is wrong. So wrong that an Arizona members extremely clean 87 TC was burned to the ground.

Basically they question all of the tech articles (especially the electrical ones) accuracy.

I know I readed the article. But they them self cannot come to a conclusion as the best way to do it. Plus they were thinking or at least I remember reading that they were thinking it was something he did wrong or forgot to do. Dosen't matter since doing the relays is easy and jcassity should have come up with it instead of calling it a dumb ass idea.

wait wait....the 3G alternator is wrong? That is not something I want to toy around with...

That's going to make me want to pull out the schematics and actually look things over when I get home. What's wrong about it? I've been trusting the instructions here with good results so far.

The guy who wired it up likely caused the meltdown that occured. many other people have used the tech article to a t and had no problems for thousands and thousands of miles. My opinion is that he probly wired it wrong, and then tried to cover it up an blame it on someone else. Thats my opinin of the guy based on his questions and lack of following directions with other upgrades/mods.

Jcassidy has some opinions about how he would improve it, but no solid info. It was simply bad taste to call it dumb. Plus, Jeff K wrote that particular tech article, and i trust it.
All hail Project "Marauder" !

I stand by my 3G tech article. Many people here have done the 3G conversion with great results. My 3G conversion has been working flawlessly for many years.

I didnt just "make up" the 3G wiring with the 3 10 ga wires..... I did a bunch of research and calculations on maximum current loads on each of the 10 ga wires, and, if wired according to my article, 10 ga is more than enough (actually 3 12 ga would be enough to handle the current loads, but I built in a safety factor, as any good engineer does). To all the people claiming "should have used 6 ga", I would like to ask them where their calculations are to back up that statement. As far as the use of megafuses goes, I felt they were not needed. Of course, fuses could be added if someone wanted to.

Am I qualified to make the above statements? I think so. I have been in and out of the electrical / electronics field for over 30 years. I am currently a full professor of physics at one of the top rated engineering universities in the country, and teach topics that make the electrical system in a TC look simple and trivial. I have also worked in R&D for one of the largest manufacturers of electrical distribution equipment in the country, where I delt with high voltage and high current (100s of kilovolts and kiloamp currents)systems on a daily basis.

I don't have a basis to form an opinion as I know jack about electronics. My knowledge ends at "negative is ground".

I also was not there with the installer, nor have I ever done a 3G swap. I have lit 2 stock alternators on fire though.

All that being said, I used Jeff K's headlight and foglight relay articles on our old 87 TC auto DD. They were in there for two years and 0 problems, even with Silverstar bulbs. And again, I know NOTHING about wiring, so I was amazed I could get it working at all.

The guy said that he did not do the wires on the regulator plug because they were already the way the tech article said they should be. He said almost as if the PO had already done the plug wires for doing the 3g up grade in the future. He also said that it seems that the plug burned the hottest. So in effect he did not do the regulator wire checks and put them like they should go according to the tech article. To me he screwed up by not following the instructions to check them. The wire colors were changed at the factory for some reason is the only thing I can come up with.

All I know is the factory wiring is crap. My 2nd TC would have burnt to the ground if it wasn't for me carrying an extinguisher in the car. Even then it almost burnt the entire car down. The plug caught fire (original alt and plug) and it spread very, VERY fast.
