Lots of vehicles were built in Lorain through the years but Mustangs were not part of the mix.

so does that mean this is an early TC trans? i thought only turbo birds got manuals?

ill try to get a caliper on the shaft this week and see what the input size is. either way, even if it is a 5.0 box, i think im going to run it. i know the ratios will be a bit long, but i need something fast and cheap, i spent over a grand last weekend on fuel and hotels with the wife for our 4th anniv, plus anouther $100 for the driv eto Erics (SOOOOO worth it).

does it matter which engine the trans is for when i order a clutch? i want to get a stg 2 clutch, but i want to order it for a 86 TC right? not a 5.0 stang?

The vehicle that trans originated was built in Lorain, since there were no Mustangs built there, only logical choice is '84 Turbo Coupe...

jmthunderbirdturbo Wrote:so, i dug a trans out of my shed. i have what i was told was an early 80's 5.0 stang trans. i have no idea what it is, or if i even got the right numbers off of it. i was able to find 3 part numbers, no 'tag' per-say, these are cast into the casing in various places.

13-52-066-908
13-52-065-904
13-51-097-901

this was stamped into the case
DH133087

its a 10 spline input, 6 and 1/2 inches long input shaft, case length is roughly 25".

if this is a 5.0 T5, can i just swap the input shafts from my old box and go?

i found reference to a 1352-065 as being from an 84 5.0 mustang, having a 2.95 1st, and an 0.63 OD. is this what i have here? would that be a good gearset for a stone stock 86 TC?

TurboCoupe50 Wrote:You can check ratio by putting it into first and counting number of turns input shaft requires to turn output one time... A 4cyl trans will be around four while a 5.0 trans will be three...

Tom

Basically it boils down to this, IF the 1st gear ratio is around 4:1, it's a 4cyl trans... No if's and's or but's... No 5.0 trans ever had a steeper than a 3.35 1st and it's impossible to build one without using the 4cyl input, case and gears...

input shaft measures .590"

since this was a lorain plant vehicle, which made no mustangs, ill assume then that this is a turbocoupe trans from an 83-84? correct?

That being the case, i also discovered that the collar on the nose for the TO bearing is broken off. is this an easy part to locate? im going to pull the car apart tomorrow, and the transmission in question.

update: found a trade. My Weld racing draglites for a WC T5 out of an 87, with an 86 cable bell, and a DS yoke in good shape. a guy in tulsa, so the shipping will suck, but its gonna get me going. i just need to buy a new clutch kit, and some universal joints.

I would think that's correct. Shaft diameter is consistent with the '87TC tranny I got sitting here on the garage floor.
