foglamp relay conversion

Hey everybody,
I read some of the earlier posts about hooking the foglamps up to the battery through a relay. There was talk about rewiring this a certain way so that the dashboard switch could still be used and the foglamps would stay on with the brights on.

Does anyone have a detailed diagram on how to do this? Also, does a certain type/size of relay need to be used?

I checked the tech articles but didn't see anything listed for this topic. I need to do this to my TC and my 85 Mercury Capri. Appriciate any info.

Thanks
Gene

- Obtain a normally-open SPST 30-amp relay, some wire, and connectors. You'll want a few insulated female spade connectors to attach the wires to the relay terminals.

- Cut both wires for the fog light switch, leaving a few inches on the switch. One should be red and black, the other is tan and orange. Securely tape off the red/black wire coming out of the dash, this is the former feed wire for the fog lights which you won't be using anymore.

- Find a wire that gets power when the car is running. The stereo harness is a good one because it's easy to access, and if you short something out and blow a fuse, it's not on an essential circuit. Tap into that wire, and connect it to the red/black wire attached to the fog light switch.

- Run the other wire on the foglamp switch to one side of the relay coil. Wire the other side of the coil to a good ground (a screw going into the chassis works well).

- At this point, turn the ignition on and cycle the fog lamp switch. You should hear and feel the relay click. If not, check your connections.

- Now run a wire from the battery through the firewall. I'd suggest running the wire thru the hood release cable grommet and inner fender. Install a fuse holder as close to the battery as possible. Crimp a ring terminal on the wire end and attach it to the pos. battery terminal bolt. Don't install a fuse just yet.

- Attach this wire to the Common terminal of the relay.

- Attach the tan/orange wire hanging out of the dash to the normally-open terminal of the relay.

- Put it all back together and make sure that the relay clicks when you cycle the switch when the car is on, but not when it's off.

- Install a 20-amp fuse in the fuseholder, and verify that the foglamps work.

Voila! Now your fogs work with the headlights on low/high-beam or completely off, and shut off with the car.

But il add one thing in, you can remove the fuse int eh main fuse block now cz it is nto doign anything now as the fog lights are running off another source, just soemthign did to be sure the wires wont short out
