FMIC Install 1/1/06 Update

Finally getting around to installing the nice big polished FMIC I got from Les Tucker at Carlisle in 2004; I've been putting off it's installation for various reasons. Now, what with the new turbo that's going in, I decided this was it.

Progress has been slow; I've got a couple friends in fabrication that are helping me whose schedules I've had to work around, but hey, it's all good! Had time today to take some preliminary shots of the IC sitting in place and bolted to the lower brackets; you can see that the upper bracket hasn't been finished yet. Hopefully sometime this week.

There are some good shots of the industrial-strength lower brackets installed as well as ready for install. Wanted to share with you all so that if you're contemplating such a procedure, you could see how at least one guy did it.

Pictures are at the link in the "JR's News" entry on my website (link in my sig). Enjoy.

1/1/2006 Update: Woo Hoo, major progress - We got the IC upper bracket finished and installed yesterday; the IC is now completely mounted! Tom and I also did some major brainstorming for the waste gate and the downpipe, which we'll be working on some today. A few more pictures added at the site listed above of the upper bracket for your viewing pleasure. Cheers and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

WooHoo!!!!! I've been waiting a LONG time to read this post...

I can't wait to see the power results as well. I've got three more that I am contemplating for projects. This Precision SC-50 with one in my Explorer... or in the 82 GT when the motor goes in it shortly. I figure it will look nice hiding behind the older body style's grill. Oh well, I'll wait for all your pointers. I will see you and Katie at Carlisle I hope? Happy Holidays and stay safe from me and Becky AND Troy!

Pretty sweet Joe, by the look of those brackets, it sure isnt going to go anywhere Big Grin

Are you going to take the piping around the outside of the core support with that set-up? Also are you going to rotate the intake to shorten the pipes on that side? I'm planning the IC set-up for the Capri, and thats where I'm hung up Wink

Bob, I trust my industrial-strength brackets; the IC is going nowhere! Big Grin Not going to rotate the intake, at least not now, who knows what the future holds. Piping will do a 180° turn around the core support and enter the engine compartment on either side of the radiator; I'll need to move the carbon canister to clear the passenger side area.

I really had no desire for a bunch of structural mods, so I cogitated a lot and this is what I came up with. Not exactly quick or dirty, but good, solid engineering!

And I am working on the next mods, all at the same time Big Grin they include an SC-50 hybrid turbo and a TiAL 38mm external wastegate. In toto, ought to be quite a kick-in-the-pants power difference when it's done!

BTW new pictures of the upper bracket on my site. Later, peeps, I'll keep you informed.

real nice clean job. you dont see many mods done the right way. it would look a lot better without that condencer in the way though. and a nice custom hole in the facia for the air to go into the intercooler.
when you mounted the lower brackets from SS did you first bolt some SS to the core support. SS will not weld to regular steel. IT WILL BREAK. there 2 completely differant metals.

This was something that concerned me as well, so I asked my friend before he welded them. Tom's been in the welding business (mainly stainless for the food industry but steel and aluminum as well) for well over 20 years (you should see his beads - they're things of beauty); he's built headers, racks, you name it. In short, I trust him and his knowledge.

So the short answer to your comment is that with the correct heat, rod, and technique the welds will hold like they're one piece of metal even though they're different metals, because it's the rod material that joins the two together.

Out of curiosity, where did you get your info?
