if i lower a 87 tbird tc will it mess up the firm ride suspension

Nope,in fact,if you lower it she'll be in permanent firm mode.You will still be able to use the switch,but it will be practically unnoticable.

Shouldn't he be okay using a lowered prgressive rate spring? Ther should still be a noticeable diff between firm and soft if the right springs are used.

My car is lowered, and when I got it the firm ride was not working! The car bounced like mad! I later discovered that I had no turn signals or back up lites this is because all three work off the same fuse. Once it was fixed and firm ride was working again there was a HUGE improvment in handling and no more bounce! So the anser to your question is, no lowering your tc will not efect the programable ride control aka firm ride.
