I did the LA3 swap in my 86 TC and car is very responsive but I am still having a problem when I hit red line 6000-6500rpm( car parked in driveway). The car shakes and sputters and does not want to continue to accelerate. It has new 255 walbro fuel pump, kirban adj fpr, new flowed and cleaned injectors, plugs gapped at .34, new fuel filter, new ranger cam and I replaced one bad HLA that took forever to pump up. I didnt replace the other ones which may be as old as the car.

Am I experiencing valve float? Are the old HLA's giving out at high rpm? Whats up?

At redline it hits the fuel cutoff rev limiter. It's programmed into the EEC

+1 for the rev limiter. that ranger cam isnt one to make power that high anyway unless youve got a cam gear thats retarded a few degrees. sounds like youve got a good setup tho. fmic too?

Computer says "no more go" at 6250. You'll need an EEC tuner if you wanna bypass the limiter.

+1, Anything past 4500rpm is wasted time on stock intakes/head/turbo/intercooler. The graphs fall off. I've seen'em run faster shifted sooner than what I'd feel is proper, but that's how it goes.

i always shifted at 5k cuz i ost power and thought it was just my car set up, now i liek that im not the only one..... friend of mien told me to run it out to 55 or 6, i think tha too far... i have it confirmed now from other tcr's thanks!

The little legit drg racing I did with the IHI and stock cam yeilded the same conclusions as BLJ is sying. The car did better short shifting into 4th than trying to wind 3rd tight to the end

i just expierenced the loss of power in high RPMs too. i finally got to run my car with 15lbs and she pulled gret until about 4k-4,200. 3rd just takes me so long to hit high revs and by the time i hit 5k the boost is at max but im not pulling, as sson as i hit 4th she starts to pull again, so i agree with the shift into 4th sooner and not try to hit those high revs, seems almost like a loss of power.

and ofcourse im running all stock at the moment. i actually thought it was just me, thought something was wrong because 3rd took so long to get in high rpms. good to know its not just me Big Grin

yes you need a t3 to rev past 5k rpm really. and a bigger one at that. the tiny ihi turbo is good for instant low end boost, but it runs out of steam up high. even with a bigger cam, ported intakes, and the like, youre really just adding mods that opperate out of that turbo's power/rev range.
