88 TC. Need help from all you Pro's. Two things: When eng is cold, starts great runs good. When I stop at a store, engine very difficult to get started again, but when I do get it started, it will run fine till I shut it down and try another re-start. Next, Drove car from Pittsburgh to Albany, NY, everything ran great, except for the re-starts. Continued to drive in Albany for several days, all ok. Now I'll go a few minutes and engine shuts off, not even fully warmed up yet, wait a few minutes, eng starts again and goes for another couple of minutes then eng shuts off. Just finished running codes three times and got a 21 for KOER only and 51 for KOEO only which faults the ECT sensor, could this sensor cause my problems for shut downs and hard starts? or totally something else. I am aware about the TFI and PIP issues, but I don't get any codes for that. Made sure eng is up to normal temps for the code tests. KOER-21 and KOEO-51 with a contiuous memory also 51, which I just cleared. You have all been very helpful in the past, love my 88 TC

Maybe a bad EEC relay or something? Honestly I have no clue, but I'm pretty sure a bad ECT is not going to cause these symptoms. Have you done any fuel system diagnostics?

Also - I may be wrong, but I don't believe there is a TFI-related error code. There is a "PIP Circuit Failure" code (14), but no TFI code as far as I can tell.

There is a TFI code, but it is called an IDM (ignition diagnostic monitor) code. CM 16, if I remember correctly. PCM monitors TFI grounding coil to fire it. If PCM doesnt see TFI grounding coil it sets the code. I dont think EEC IV used IDM before 85 or 86. I have seen TFI failure with the code, and TFI failure without the code on various Fords. Same with the PIP related CM 14. CM 14 can be set by failing PIP, but also by electrical interference in the low voltage PIP output circuit.

Weeellll Shooot - my bad... Someone needs to update this list. No CM 16 or IDM listed...

Maybe this list is pre-'86 or something?

Thanks for the help guys! Just to give you an update: I failed to mention, We did have severe thunderstorms and lots of rain for several days. My car did sit for all of these days getting soaked and not driven. These symptons I explained above, all happened right after the rain except for the hard starting after engine is warm. After three days of good weather, I took her out for a drive yesturday and all went well, no shut downs for over three hours of driving. Do you think dampness and moisture found is way into the electrical system to cause the shut downs, or just a coincidence? I am looking into a TFI and PIP, hard to find. NAPA auto can get them, any pointers on theirs or a good place to get one? God Bless All of You who have served and are serving in the Armed Forces. Thank you

Problems in moist conditions usually mean secondary ignition problems (coil, plug wires, dist cap).

Thanks Jeff, all have been changed except for the coil. Any pointers where to buy a TFI and PIP?

Here's one option to get the Motorcraft stuff
http://www.forced4.com/svostore.html
It's hit or miss getting a non-Motorcraft brand TFI. Could be DOA, last a week, a month, or 20 years. The "safe" way to go is to just buy Motorcraft.
