degreasing an engine should NOT be that complicated. get a can of arosol engine degreaser, purple power, or simple green and spray it on there and let it set. get a gunk brush and brush away, then take a water hose to it. just make sure you cover all your electric stuff. brake cleaner is another easy tool since you can use the small hose to get into small spots.

yes good point pete. MAKE SURE you wash it all clean if you use a cleaner. it can harm paint and give it a glazed look, then if your lucky it will just take some compound and polish to restore it, maybe even wet sanding and buff, or if it sits to long your just outta luck.

i should warn against simple green. do not use it on anything ANODIZED! its a mild costic and will strip the anodizing from the aluminum.

I recently built an electrolysis tank for restoring some rusty firearms I had laying around. I decided to dunk a few large rusty car parts in there to see what would happen and was quickly impressed. I built the tank for about 4 dollars using a plastic bucket, old cell phone charger, and scrap metal and scrap wiring. Do a Google search for "Electrolysis Rust Removal" and you'll find plenty of howto articles.

My dad use to have a couple of 50' chevy show cars and I wondered how he kept the engine so clean as these were driven a lot, well one had only 30k miles so not a lot. Anyway he used WD-40. Soaked the engine compartment and all, then used a high pressure washer. Looked like new and no paint was harmed.

If you are looking to clean an engine that is the car, and you do not want to damage anything, go to your local motorcycle shop and pick up a bottle of S100. The stuff is not cheap, but it can be used on pretty much any surface without harm (think of a motorcycle, chrome, aluminum, paint, rubber). I use it for regular washings all of the time.

I think I iwll try the WD-40 idea, coupled with the S-100. Let the WD-40 loosen the baked on grime, then let the S-100 cut through it all. Should make everything nice and clean!

Shiny Side Up!
Bill
Wait, where does this go?
