electronic struts

if all goes according to plan, i am set to pick up an '87 Turbocoupe this weekend, its a 5-speed, white w/grey leather interior and every option. the body has seen better days and it has high mileage but everything works on this car (including the heater and air conditioning...quite well i might add) and its dirt cheap.

one thing that has been replaced however are the electronically adjustable struts...it now has konis. id kind of like to restore this car to its original 1987 glory, so at some point i would like to get another set of the factory electronic ones. how much will these set me back and where can i find them, and also if i lower the car will i still be able to use them?

you should still be able to get the stock replacements through a ford dealer..they are not cheap..i paid about $600 for shocks and struts, aftemarkets are hard to come by for this car, most companies still have rear replacements availiable but not the fronts...i also wanted to keep mine all original too, call your dealer soon though because when i ordered mine(about 6 months ago) it took about 1 week to locate them and was told the supplies are dwindiling,be sure your guy is giving you a discount, mine were about 35% off list price.I dont think you shold be using them when you lower your car but pete the administrator is better suited to ansewer that question,i'm sure he'll reply..good luck to u..Eric

Actually Pete isn't the guy to ask as he hasn't lowered his car. I don't think lowering an inch is a problem but let's hear from some of the guys that have actually done it.

Lowering 1" on most 87-88 will end up with wheel rub on the upper inside of the wheel well during corning, especially so if you are not running stiff wall "performance tires" and even then you will have rubbing on hard corners. This is using stock tire size. If you lower the car 1", you can offset that by dropping your tire height accordingly, which will improve the overall handling and looks as well.

I am running Eibach springs that lowered the car 1" and caused rubbing. I lowered my tire size to 225/55/ZR16 and have no problems plus it gives the car a better stance look without the gap between the tire and wheel well. As far as speedo readings, it altered it a few miles per hour (reads 60 but is actually 57-58).

Yes OE shocks can be found from some dealers though expensive. Aftermarket Tokicos are no longer available (unless you find an individual with a set), however you can email Ron at Tokico to request they re-issue them (as the rest of of members have emailed that request). See previous post on that subject for more info.

Eibach lowering springs are no longer available either (unless you find an individual with a set). Some have used springs for different applications, but I can not reply to that, and is better left to those who have done so.

Whomever has/is using lowering springs from another vehicle, please email me a write-up on parts used, part numbers, and any info you can give about the procedure. I will add it to our FAQ's page for all to reference when needed.

Try Gene Evans Ford: www.gefracing.com. Look under "Factory Parts Catalog". The price for struts are $109.80 ea. and shocks are $91.15 ea. I think this is a great price .... I paid around $800.00 + shipping for my set and I still feel the pain!!!! [Image: mad.gif]
