Electronic Gremlin (long post)

This all started while I was driving my 88 home from work and "poof" it died! Checked it all over and found no spark. The root of the problem was a 20 guage fusible link (I got the idea from the search area) and a lot of help from Pete D and Jeff K. Next was the seven blade fan wouldn't shut off. I've gone through 3 used IRCM's and one brand new one, "fan still runs." Tonight after disconnecting the drivers side fan, I parked the car for the night, only to hear the fuel pump running, but the "keys" were in my hand!
Well, I disconnected the battery and now I'm here on the computer looking for answers. Also, does anyone have a gremlin trap, I think I need one?

I'd suspect the IRCM however you've eliminated that I see ???? But it seems to be the common thread for the Fans and Pump.

I don't know what circuit would always be hot with the key off that would cause the FP to run ??? Maybe the FP relay was fused shut ?

I think this qualifies as a WTF ?

Lot's of help I gave you huh ????

Dan E, since we have the oldest brewery in the country, I'll bring a couple of cases to Carlisle, so we can figure this mess out!

Looking through my eec book. It says that the fuel pump runs when it sees an

ignition-on signal,
crank signal from the ignition switch,
a PIP signal from the hall effect,

If the PIP siganal falls below 120 rpm, the control module cuts off the signal to the fuel pump relay.

You may have already tried this but your ignition switch could be on its way out. Have you switched back to the original ircm. Since it didn;t do this (fuel pump) on the other ircms, maybe you got a lemon. As for the cooling situation, i don't have any idea, i'm still trying to get my cooling fans to work properly.

Look at the bright side though. At least your fans run..........

Good Luck

Maybe if we switch the fans from Bill's car to Dans and vise versa, both car will work right.

I'm a big help aren't I guys? [Image: biggrin.gif]

What shape is the ignition switch in? If it is of unknown age / condition, I would replace it. Cheap and easy to do, and even if it doesnt solve the problem (I have a feeling it might), it is probably due for replacement anyway.

Jeff, I was thinking the same thing, but I replaced the switch again today, thinking I got a bad one off the shelf (made in Mexico).
There is a little evidence that something is hot down stream from the switch. The terminal connector where it connects to terminal A2 in the ignition switch, shows evidence that it had been very warm (started to melt). I suspect that there may be a serious problem somewhere between the switch and the fusible link down stream. What's your thought?

Well I think I'm on the right track, but I need some help from a wiring diagram. Where do wires 687 GY/Y (12) D and 687H GY/Y (12) D, go from the ignition switch? What do they control? The original switch I removed from the steering column indicates some signs of heat on those terminal (A2) lugs.

i see 1 gy/y 687 becomes the resistance wire to thr IVR.
Another goes to fuse link N and on to ABS system and the 02 sensor.

another to fuses 5 and 17 in the panel
