electrical problem

Hey guys, it's been a while. My TC was losing power the other day. I would step on gas and the boost gauge would register as soon as I touched it but very little power. I got home and it died just before I hit the driveway. The battery was pretty much drained so I thought it could be alternator. Further battery inspection yielded one dry cell. It will take a charge but probably won't hold it. I took alternator to Advance Auto and they said it was over charging and also said there was evidence of burning. All I could see was some light carbon dusting. I had some alternator work done a few years ago so I will get with the people that did the work to see what they think. Would an over charging alternator cause the symptoms/problems I'm having?

Mj the alternator and battery system is the heart of the electrical system. It must work properly. Chuck that battery and replace the alternator with a chevy unit or a ford mod that pete turned me on to. I never updated with the ford stuff only GM. I run a diesel DELPHI its like 130 AMPS at 2500 RPM. Hope this helps. Pete has a setup with the ford HD diesel unit that will work great and probably easier than installing a GM unit. I am shure he will help on this one. He has done the mod. Tom Senior. Big Grin Big Grin

There is an article on the Ford 3G install by Jeff in the Tech Articles, on installing a 130 amp version. It requires some small amount of grinding on the alt bracket to put in a 130. I am told by those that have dropped in the 95 amp version of the 3G that no grinding is necessary and your still improving output by at least 30 amps over stock

Thanks guys, I know th battery is pretty well shot. I'm surprised it lasted this long. As for the alternator, would an overcharging one cause me to lose power? The original symptoms hardly seemed to be electrical.

I will study up on the alternator mods. I've learned since I've had my TC that the originals are very weak.

I can't say about the power loss vs the electrical situation. If nothing else was going on, I would say check the cam timing. Sometimes when the cam timing is off, you get quick boost indicated, but the power isn't there.

I can't see how the timing belt could have jumped, Pete, but I'll look into that as well after I get the charging system figured out as Tom said. The 3G mod will have to wait for now.

Thanks again for all the insite.
