EGR Question

OK I asked this same question on the other site(name with held) and got 0 answers. So here I go again. Does blocking off the EGR valve cause any error codes? I have read of a few doing this. Trying to clean up the engine compartment a bit. Also will it hurt anything to have the knock sensor removed? My new motor is an 84 and dosen't have the knock sensor. Thanks Denny

I get an EGR Code 34 on mine anyhow (EGR recall wasn't performed) now...and I still have my EGR hooked up.

I have heard a few people say that blocking off the EGR has no ill efects (not sure about the codes ?).

'84 didn't have knock sensors ? I only ask because I don't know for sure... Are you using the '84 Upper and Lower Intake too ? I thought they had a knock sensor in a different location... Anyhow, having the KS unplugged is something a lot of people do. Just be sure and listen for detonation and run the highest octane fuel you can.

Dan the motor I opted to put in my TC was one I bought off E-Bay. It's an 84 Turbo Cougar motor w/9000 miles (verified)I put a big valve head that was done by Esslinger, ported, polished. The rest is off the orig. 88TC except the ported T/3 which was done by a local turbo shop. It's almost done except the question of the egr valve. Doesn't the ks go into the drainplug on the side of the block? Anyhow thanks for the information Dan, I'm trying to get this done before Carlisle 2002 Denny

Denny:

The KS is tapped into the Lower Intake Manifold (it's in different locations on different models though).

Removing the EGR wont cause a check engine light, and wont put the EEC in limp home mode. With the EGR removed, it will set a code 34 during the KOER self test.

Removing the EGR has no effect on WOT performance, as it closes at WOT anyway. The motor may be more sensitive to part throttle pinging with no EGR, as the EEC is timing map is calibrated to account for the slower burn rate when the EGR lets exhaust into the mix. Some people say gas mileage drops a little with no EGR, but I havent heard any hard numbers on this.

The 84 XR7 had a knock sensor. It's in the lower intake. I kept mine in as a safety net when I put the rebuilt motor in. Also since I still haven't gotten the IC in yet (still screwing with the Ranger [Image: mad.gif] runs bad as it warms up) and running 15-16 psi boost, it keeps things from going bump in the night. When I swapped the square intake during the rebuild I kept the KS.

Thats cool if I was using the orig 84 intake, but I am going to use the intake off the 88, its already gutted. Where else could I put the ks? Denny
