Can the EGR be removed? Are there any bonuses or down sides to doing this?

They can be blocked, it's been done more than once. There are some potential downsides - search the past posts for particulars.

My EGR valve was not functioning. When I fixed it, the part-throttle pinging I had got much better, and my gas mileage went up by 2+ mpg. It is closed at WOT, so there is no performance loss either. For these engines at least, EGR is your friend!

100% correct! Plus, if you live in an emissions testing area that measures NOx emissions, like most IM240 type tests do, you will flunk without a functioning EGR system.

Yep, we have a drive clean program in Ontario. I best leve it alone [Image: biggrin.gif] But I dont know how it will pass when I'm finished all my mods [Image: eek.gif]

What mods? Main thing that will make the car flunk is a big cam. I have heard that people have trouble passing an IM240 type test with the A237 cam, but as long as you have a relatively mild cam, and everything else is working properly, you should have no trouble passing the smog test. Both my TC and Tbird 5.0 are fairly heavily modded, and I have never flunked the very strict roller dyno IM240 type test we have here.
