I’ve been using Stant thermostats for years with no issues.

There are special installation instructions in the Ford Shop Manual. You’re supposed to engage the tangs on the thermostat with the matching tabs in the housing. With some thermostats that works, others it doesn’t. I have done it both ways—engaged and not—and either seems to work.

You might find part of the rubber seal that fits around the ‘stat partially blocks the heater hose bypass tube inside the housing. I trimmed mine back a bit to allow better clearance; no harm done, all works as it should.
Another proud dues-paying member.

1987 Turbo Coupe w/T5OD, 8.8 axle, grey smoke; most options. Got it in 1991 with 41K miles: 3 turbos, 2 heater cores, 3 T5OD full rebuilds, 6 clutches, 1 head gasket, 2 Teves II ABS units, etc. later....

The electrical connection is a "push on" type used by Ford for temp gauge and oil pressure senders since at least the 1960s (probably to ease assembly on the production line). The push on connector looses tension with the "screw thread" output stud of the sender and increases the resistance of the connection causing the temp gauge to read low. Tried several things over the years to improve the connection with so so results (as noted, that thing is HARD to access!!). My (hopefully) final solution was to put a zip tie around the push on connector to keep the split barrel connection tighter and then jam some stranded copper wire (18 AWG or so) inside the barrel connector so it was very hard to push on the sensor. Seems to have worked for the last year or so (fingers crossed!)

Not sure if you would find this useful or not, but RA has little prompts that show up when you buy certain parts. You could call it up selling or you could call it useful relevant info.
Either way, when I ordered that sensor for the gauge, underneath that in bold letters it said "If you also need to replace the corresponding connector, add part number S635 to your order"

It's only $2.15 CDN

It also told me to avoid premature failure(of my new injectors) I should replace the fuel filter. I replaced it a few years back when I also replaced the gas tank(new). Decided probably don't need that.
