when i turn my car on the fans kick on right away and the engine almost dies, (so i disconnected the fans) ive been reading hundreds of posts on here in the history and thinking this might have something to do with the way my car is running, and if so what is the easiest way to change the ect? b/c it doesnt look too fun

it could be the ect, but im gonna leave it at that. there is alot of things i dont know about the ect so i dont want to lead you but read what you can. i replaced mine and noticed an increase in mpg anyway.

replacement, someone used a deep socket with an elbow and extension without removing the upper intake and small hands bc you have to remove the sender wire on top. i removed the upper intake and that was enough for me. you should get used to removing that bc you have todo it for almost everything. i used a 1 inch deep socket which comes out to 25 MM. just make sure you clean the crap around it before you pull it so nothing falls in there.

It is normal for the passenger side fan to come on briefly (2-3 seconds usually) every time the engine is started. If the fan(s) is staying on, that is another issue. Tell us exactly what is happening and for how long? If a fan is staying on all the time, I would suspect a bad fan relay(s) in the IRCM. The relays can be replaced.
See http://www.turbotbird.com/techinfo/New_IRCM/IRCM.html
There is a relay for each fan.

Have you pulled the codes? Did you get an ECT code? Have you run the cooling fan test mentioned here? http://www.turbotbird.com/techinfo/Cooli...ingFan.htm

A bad ECT does not always set a code. Normaly when there is an ECT problem it is that the fans don't come on or come on when the engine is warmer than it should be.

the only codes it came up with when someone ran it was the tfi and tps but i wasnt there when they did it, and the fan would come on for like a min. and then go off and come back on in like another minute

If both fans are coming on due to ECT telling the PCM coolant temp is way high, I would expect the ECT to set an out of range - temp over 256 deg code. A quick test is to start car and then remove the electrical plug from the ECT. If fans stop running, problem could likely be the ECT. If fans continue to run, problem is not the ECT.

ok i just replaced the o2 sensor and gapped all my plugs out and noticed that yes just the passenger side fan kicks on for a couple sec. then shuts off and then a couple mins. later does the same thing and i let the car run for about a half hour and it kept doing that the whole time and its running rich as hell and the plugs have only been in about 100 miles if that and were black as hell, so does this sound like the ect. is bad, cuz everything else is new, tps. egr. pip. o2, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter

When I got my car the fans did that on/off on/off thing. A year later I got a code for the ECT and changed it.

Did I send you a file with info on testing the ECT?

The ECT has nothing to do with the temperature gauge. There is a seperate sensor/sending unit for the gauge.

Yes, a bad ECT could make it run rich
