Ebay Super 60 Write-up

I know what you all must be thinking but It is in and it works really good. This is a write up on how I did it and what I did to make it work good and last long. First Start out with the cheap-o super 60 turbo off of ebay (type in super 60 turbo in an ebay search and you will find a bunch for under 200) Next is the important part. Purchase a 360 degree thrust bearing ($60) and a stagger gap piston seal ($20) from ebay or source of your choice. Here is a pic of the ebay turbo vs. the IHI http://natomessageboard.com/uploads/0000...-08005.jpg Next you install the 360 thrust bearing. VERY IMPORTANT!! Mark the compressor wheel in relation to the exhaust wheel before you take off the front bolt that holds the compressor wheel on. you will have to buy 3 screws from the hardware store and a matching drill bit with tap. The screws should be 1/4 inch longer than the thickness of the 360 thrust bearing. You will also want to mark the drill bit accordingly so you dont drill too far into the center section. Here are a few pics. http://natomessageboard.com/uploads/0000...-08001.jpg http://natomessageboard.com/uploads/0000...-08003.jpg http://natomessageboard.com/uploads/0000...-08002.jpg http://natomessageboard.com/uploads/0000...-08004.jpg Make sure you keep everything super clean and blast out all metal shavings with compressed air and brake clean. Remember it only takes one metal shaving to screw up your brand new turbo. Now go ahead and carefully install the stagger oil seal onto the turbine wheel shaft in place of the old one. After you complete this you can put the turbo back together. You will need a wastegate actuator for a t-3 and the exhaust O2 housing with some bolts from the hardware store again. I also bought a 3 inch downpipe from stinger for the install. When you bolt the actuator up you must grind down one bolts so the oil return line will clear when you clock the turbo to match up to the intercooler. http://natomessageboard.com/uploads/0000...-08030.jpg . There are plenty of write-ups on how to install a t-3 onto 87-88 birds on this site and if you have an 86 or down this is pretty straight forward. I can tell you this, It is definately bigger than a real super 60 thus is does spool a little slower but It makes a ton of power when it hits. I have had it on my car for 300 miles set on 15psi and I have no shaft play and everything else is perfect. You can take a chance with the stock 270 thrust bearing and oil seal but I wouldnt recommend it as I have hurt both on high boost with a genuine garrett turbo. I hope this will help members who want a bigger, reliable turbo for cheap. Take my word and dont be scared to take a turbo apart. If you are careful and follow directions to a tee then you should not have any problems. I'd like to add for the record, I also rebuilt the garrett super60 turbo I had on the old Turbocoupe with the same 360 thrust beearing and gapless oil seal and ran that at 27psi with methanol injection for almost 5000 miles. The turbo was still perfect after I melted a piston due to an injector sticking shut at 110 mph.
1987 TC 5 speed. To date: AGP 50 trim T3/T4 .63 stage 2 turbo, Ebay bov, 28psi, 255hp pump, Kirban FPR, Ebay Front mount, Full 3 inch Exhaust, Ported Bob's Log, Megasquirt, 55lb. injectors, boport 1.5 cam, boxed lower control arms, Methanol Kit, Ram HD Clutch, front lowered 1/2 inch and E.T. Streets for the track. Best so far 12.5 at 110.8. still tuning.
