Easy fix for curling armrest...

My drivers side armrest was starting to curl some at the bottom and a little at the top. When removed you can see the cover is pulling away form the base causing the curling problem. I used weatherstrip adhesive under the edge and then pulled the cover TIGHT with blue painters tape. After about an hour, removed the tape and the armrest looks good as new. It has been a few weeks and 110* here with no problems!

Be sure to tape the entire length. pulling the tape tight from the top cover around the curling edges to the metal base. The tape will stick a little to some of the excess weatherstrip adhesive that squeezes out, but it does come off with out too much trouble. Be sure to remove the tape from the top so you don't pull up against the newly glued area.

Good idea. I wasn't sure it any type of glue would work and used pop rivets to hold in in place on the bottom side. Snugged up the overlap and placed them a few inches apart.

Your idea would be easier for sure :-)

I've done this on a number of projects similar to this with good results.

I would recommend either 3M Super Weatherstrip Adhesive item# 08008
or Loctite Fast Drying Weatherstrip Adhesive
item# 37532
You should be able to find it at your local auto parts store

I just did this same repair this weekend, but used a thin strip of metal and pop rivets.

Pulled the cover material tight and sandwiched it between the base and metal strip, drilled and pop-rivetted it.

I've tried glue in the past and it didn't work for me.

I've used both the 3m and permatex... they seem to be identical products, both come in yellow and black and are very 'stringy and stretchy' when applying. You can stretch the cover very evenly with the tape and the adhesive holds it there very well.

i just used a bunch of short sheet metal screws they use on the chrome wheel molding for 80's LTD's,.
but i accidentally went through when drilling pilot hole a few times, whoops. i didn't think weather strip adhesive would stay. i know for next time

To keep from "drilling through" get some vacuumn line, cut to length and slide it over the drill bit. Then when the drill passes throught he metal it is stopped by the rubber line. (of course you aren't pressing real hard so the line can handle it)
