E-test Fail!

Need some help here to get this thing to pass an emission test. It failed on the CO and was a pass on the HC.
I know the car runs rich because that is what the air/fuel meter has been showing me. I have brown top injectors and I think red top were what came from the factory?
Would this cause it to run rich all the time?? My original reason for changing them was to get more fuel to handle more boost.
I'm not sure if this could cause a rich mixture all the time or not?
Other points:
I also had some idle problems and adjusted the idle screw on the TB...but maybe I need to calibrate the tps and wonder if that has had an effect on a/f mixture?
Should I install the factory air box and remove the k&N? (can it effect the VAM?)
This is really just a pain in the you know where....the car runs and drives very well....but if I want a sticker I need to get a pass!

Any thoughts? Am I on the right track?

Thanks

All '86-'88 used the 35Lb brown top injectors, AFAIK no TC ever used red inj... Earlier '85 use green top 30Lb inj(that are not same as 30Lb red tops used in Super Coupes)...

If A/F gage was reading high why did you even take it in without checking items mentioned???

Yes, I agree with you, I took out brown top injectors and installed the red tops.
It went for the test because I didn't know if I could trust the a/f meter....but I guess it is working Tongue
It is just a pita to have to swap out the injectors...but I think this is the logical place to start.

are you sure about the injector sizing??? It was 10 years ago, but I'm sure the SC injectors were bigger than the stock TC ones...but I could be wrong...

I'm going to check but if I remember correctly we installed 1995 SC injectors that were 36#
Now if I did install 30# injectors wouldn't that give me a lean condition???

CO failure is an o2 sensor failing 90% of the time,
if the HC was high then your running too rich.

what are you actual CO and HC readings. post them if you can.

Earler SC used a red 30Lb inj, later used a dark blue 36Lb, neither of these should be used in a TC as the impedance is different... TC inj are around two ohms, while the SC and most other Ford vehicles are 14 ohm...

TurboCoupe50, you are 100% correct on this injector issue. I had a look and I have the blue top 36# ones in there now. I still have the original brown tops and I'm going to put them back in.
I can change the o2 sensor for piece of mind too.

The readings:
HC @ idle 198 / @2500 rpm 151 (limit 200)
CO% @ idle 8.02 / @2500 rpm 6.4 (limit 1)

This is all they test for in Ontario

You can't successfully run high impedance injectors with the TCs low impedance PCM. I am surprised it doesn't run like crap with the high impedance injectors in there. Install the correct low impedance brown tops, set the TPS, and drive it a whole to let the PCM relearn fuel trims, and go back for the emission test.

if it makes you feel better. im an Emissions Repair Tech for NJ.

i have one in now for high co, its at 4.5 and 7.5.
change o2. now oits .2 and .4 Smile
