Is this e-bay item worth it? Is it available elsewhere?

Sorry, I don't know how to attach things yet.

Up for auction is an aluminum relocation block with pig tail, TFI and wire leads. It allows for much needed space in the area of the distributor by moving the TFI Module off of the distributor and relocating it to the front of your vehicle. Removing the 2.3Liter TFI from the unwanted engine heat, thus extending its life. This is an excellent upgrade for Merkur, Mustang SVO and Thunderbird Turbo Coupe. Picture and instructions included. Happy Bidding!

Yes and no, IMO. I know lots of people complain about repreated TFI failures, but in 20+ years of driving EEC IV / TFI Fords hundreds of thousands of miles, I have only experienced 3 TFI failures, and one of those was a failed "no name" parts store brand one some prior owner had put on. Of the few times I have had a failure, I have always replaced BOTH the TFI and PIP, as recommended in the Ford shop manual, and never had a repeat failure.

The TFI is mounted to the dist (with heat conductive grease) to DISSIPATE heat from the TFI, which produces lots of heat. While the dist itself does get heated somewhat by being in contact with the hot engine block, much of the temp increase of the dist while the car is running is due to the TFI heating it up.

Several models of Fords came with remote mount TFIs, and you should be able to find everything you need to remote mount one at your local JY.

This is just my opinion, others may disagree.

I've got a no-name TFI module on my tbird and it was only recently that I discovered it was the cause of my cold-start dead-ness, where the car would idle fine then stall out. Start back up and idle fine, then die when some gas was given to it. Start back up then buck when gas given, then slowwwwwly but surely things would come alive, then it would drive fine. And it would do this every time it sat and was cold, with no other fuel system or electrical problems. Replace with Motorcraft TFI module and presto .... problem goes away.

Even the parts store flunkys told me not to use the one they sold, and to only use motorcraft wires. Dunno who's teaching them but they're teaching them right!

I hate to bring this up, but when FoMoCo switched from Duraspark II to TFI they did so with modules that regularly failed leaving people at best stranded and at worst involved in accidents. They built hundreds of thousands of vehicles with that module knowing they were defective, denied everything and didn't make any changes until forced to do so by law suits and finally a safety recall. The same attitude as with the ignition switch problem (your car burns up) and the Pinto problem (your car blows up). They quietly redesigned the module so they are now safe to use but the remote mount TFI is a result of the experience with the early modules because heat is what caused them to fail. I still feel uneasy about the 2.3 TFI because of the distributor location being exposed to more moisture damage than on, say, a 5.0, but you would have the same problem with the remote mount because the wires to the distributor connections would be subject to the same moisture.

Does the DIS ignition system do away with this TFI module (what used in newer year rangers)? Have many swapped over.

Well, yes, the TFI module is done away with and replaced by an ICM, ignition control module, that does the same things the TFI module did such as switch on the power to the coils. I have no idea if anyone has converted to DIS but it is not a stand-alone system that could be swapped in for the distributor and TFI module without other changes. It requires crankshaft position sensors, coil packs wiring, and a slightly changed computer program to run it. It could be done but I don't know how difficult (or easy) it would be to do. Anyone?
