I am learning that asking around for a suggested dyno shop is like asking someones religion. I can not get a straight answer out of any of these guys as to what exactly they can do for me. None of the speed/performance shops will give it up either: "well yeah there's a couple but they suck so I'm not going to tell you who they are...by the way we'll have one in September that's brand new come by then". Nice but I need it now and without the political lip.
I found a couple places but they make me nervous to begin with. One guy has a Mustang brand Dyno that he used to check speedo's and such, and now he's updating the software to do horsepower. Can't even tell me what the specs of the dyno are until he upgrades it. Sounds like a cheap machine to me.
Then there's the Honda Racing place down in Tacoma, complete with Fitty Cent blaring so loud in the background I can barely understand this guy's broken english to "V6? Just bring down here we help you out" and not answering any questions I have or hearing what I'm saying. Not a whole lotta security there either.
If I end up going into one of these places should I expect to have complete control as to what is done, and how, to my car??
I'd probably end up just spending the money on a wideband O2 and a few bucks for someone to weld a bung on my pipe for it, but I'd like to know the HP and Torque numbers to post here also.

I haven't actually put my car on the dyno yet, but I have visited a local shop and my experience was much different and I can't wait to go back with some cash to see what I make.
I'd have to say these guys sound kind of shady. The guy I talked to at the shop was very professional and straight forward. He said he wouldn't do any tuning because they only tune modulars, but they could offer advice and such. I get 3 pulls for $75 and they have to schedule it because they have a lot of guys lined up, which I guess attests to their professionalism. They are @ www.modularpowerhouse.com if you care to check it out.
Anyway, I'd take the shady "brand new dyno" guys over the "Take it down here, we help you out" guys.. LOL

Dyno shops are a strange breed. I dont know a shop around here that hasnt blown someones engine while on the rollers. This in turn gives them a bad reputation with whomever is buddies with the guy that lost the engine
Best bet for what it sounds like you want, just get some pulls with wideband, is to hook up with a local group doing a "dyno" day. These are usually 3 pulls for $50-$75. Typically little to no tuning, just the pulls.

What I want to get out of the dyno:
Max boost before running out of gas, max ignition timing, and max advance/retard for power on the adj cam sproket.
I don't mind doing these things myself between runs, I'd like to find a shop that will let me do this, I have about $300 to spend on the dyno... I don't want them to burn a chip or anything, I just want to find the safest maximum power settings that I shouldn't exceed.
And thanks Brian, I may just hit you up when I'm ready. I started tearing everything apart today.

If you really want max of each of these varaibles, its going to take a lot of pulls to get to the right "combo". For example, you may make more power with a few more degrees of timing, while giving up some boost, same the other way, it might like boost more than timing. Then you need to factor all of these with cam timing (and FP, and so on).
I cant tell you how many TnT passes I had to make to sort through all of these, and get to MY optimum combo. I've got pages of notes on my combo, and what the give and take did, and I'm still not sure I tested every combo to find the max power.

Matt, call me some time, if nothing else to shot the shit, lol. That would give you at least 2.5 to t hours on the dyno and i bet you would only need half of that here with me.

Brian I'll take you up on a phone call in the next week or so once I have everything together.
And yeah Bob that's what I'm wrestling with.
My approach is going to be boost first, then cam, then ignition. My thinking behind that is ignition timing is the easiest to control detonation (blown head gasket or worse).
I may not get that last 5 hp from a degree of cam, but basically I want to find the fuel wall and then tune everything around that; and THEN see what HP I'm getting. I'm more concerned about running lean than gaining a few hp. In fact the ONLY reason I'm going to a dyno is to find the general boost area I'm running lean, and then have a pass or 2 to see what cam and ignition timing does.
But for fuel, if I have enough FP to support a WOT run, then general cruising under closed loop should be able to compensate for any demand below that right?
