Dropping the tank - fuel filler neck

I finally got around to installing the fuel pump, but I am having a battle trying to drop the tank. I unbolted the hanger that holds the neck. Am I correct in thinking the neck is going to come out of the tank and stay with the car? I am asking because my previous drops on other cars, the neck came with the tank. How much neck is inside the tank? I have managed to move it about an inch and that is with a lot of struggle. I have a floor jack supporting the tank and I'm pushing, pulling, prying after squirting some wd40 at the seal. Can I pry the seal out or should I not mess with it?

Any hints would be appreciated... I'm taking a beer break atm. [Image: tongue.gif]

There's a fair amount of neck inside the tank. I found it easiest to dismantle the fuel filler from the vehicle body; that way you can also apply twist to the filler tube which makes it come out a whole lot easier.

Don't damage the seal or it will cause other problems. The neck does come out of the tank as Joe said.

Thanks guys, I tried again after the wd40 soaked a while and it finally gave in and squeeked out. It was just a dry tacky seal that hadn't been disturbed for 17 years. [Image: smile.gif]

Everything is back together and seems fine. I lubed that filler seal with silicone grease. It went in much easier than it came out. Car starts, no leaks, and no explosions! [Image: smile.gif]

Anything for $20 at a dealership is a bargain.

The way this fuel pump thing started was my wife got stranded 80 miles out in the desert on her way home from Vegas. She managed to limp into a Ford dealer in Victorville CA, (prior home to Roy Rogers museum). They quoted me on the phone almost $700+ to replace the pump. I paid them $80 for the diagnosis and borrowed a truck/trailer from a buddy and brought it home.

I filled buddies tank and bought him dinner, so my entire outlay was.... $225 vs ~$700. Dealers make it so easy to say NO FRIGGIN WAY!! [Image: biggrin.gif]

gas $34
meal $16
pump $95
diag $80

Hey, my time is dirt cheap!
