distributor shaft play

Hi guys,

My car threw a code 18 and is running like garbage. all signs point to a bad TFI or PIP. I have an old distributor that i was planning on using temporarily, my question is. Is it normal for there to be shaft play in and out. it has ver little side to side play.

Are there any after market tfi/pip that you would recommend. OEM parts are obsolete in Canada.

thanks,
joe

Normal for there to be some axial play in the shaft.

Code 18 = definite TFI failure. I wouldn't recommend any brand but Motorcraft. Can't you order one from Rockauto up there in the great frozen north?

thanks Jeff,

i can order from rockauto, but they do not have motorcraft TFI's they do have a motorcraft PIP though.

The spare dizzy has a 'wells' TFI....I imagine its cheap and should be replaced

They do - it's just not listed under the Thunderbird.

And they are cheap too!! Last spring I ordered 2 spares from RA just to have laying around, as I have 3 EEC IV/TFI cars.
