I have a slight problem!!!! Has anyone had problems with the distributor gears stripping out. I have no clue what is going on. I have replaced the aux. shaft and it still does it. 4 Distributors now and getting pissed. If anyone has any clue or has had some similar soft of problem; any info would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!

Could be that your oil pump is binding up ? The dist shaft drives the oil pump and if it is binding it would grind the teeth on the dist and aux shaft...

Just give it to Bobby Knight...maybe he can kick it for you (I used to live in Jasper, IN...).

If you been through 4 distributors and only the gears broke without breaking the intermediate shaft (to the oil pump) then it's probable not the shaft. The most frequent cause I hear on this problem is that the bearings (2) for the aux shaft are worn and allowing too mush play in the shaft.
Let us know what you find

Did you check the measurment on the dist from the flange to the bottom of the gear and compare it to the distance you have in the block from the dist mounting position to the bottom where the gear would ride. If the dist is longer than where it's supposed to go it will bind up when you tighten the dist down. I had it happen once, and almost put another dist in there before I checked the measurement..it would've been too long.
Also, what oil pump is in the engine? I high pressure pump will cause your problem. A high volume pump isn't as bad, but I guess they can do the same thing, but I haven't had any trouble w/ the 2 I've installed.
I wnet through this a couple months back, it was a pain.

Also, if you haven't dropped the pan and got all the gear bits out and flushed out the pump, you will wind up locking up the pump in the future as the metal bits work their way into it ....just a word of caution. Also an oil filter magnet would be a good addition to help catch anything else..even the SMALL bits that you missed frfom travelling around the motor and destroying things..
