Just got a Merkur shortblock for my new 88 TC project. From just looking at the block, everything seems to be the same with the exception of the oil filter facing back instead of straight out from the block. My question is, "Is this the same block or do I need to do any modificatioins to use this block. Is the angle of the oil filter going to be a problem? Need help asap cause this block is going in to the machine shop tommorrow.

I've heard of the oil filter set up on Merkurs but never seen one. I would think if you did some measuring you could determine any problems ahead of time. The rest of the block should be the same.

The block is the same , depending on what year it is. Take a look at the oil pan bolts and see if they are all the same or if the four at the sides of the crank are bigger.

The early blocks, use a 4 piece cork gasket and have a different rear crank main and a different lower front cover as well as a different oil pan.

The later blocks have the same different parts and use a rubber gasket.

I just used an early block in my 87 and I had to JB weld the end cap vallys in and use bolts with nuts to secure the oil pan at the sides of the crank.

If you know for sure the XR motor is from an 87 -89 it should have the newer style block.

Sorry, the early blocks will have bigger bolts at the sides of the crank for the oil pan.

The later block has all the same size oil pan bolts.

Does this mean that I cannot use the rubber gasket from a later 88 or ranger?

Since the rear crank main is different, do I just have to use a Merkur pilot bearing or do I have to change the crank too

The crank is the same. just the front and real oil pan sealing sections are different.

It can be used , but you will have to do some work. I just did it.

Does it use the two piece real oil seal then ?
