What in the world could've caused this? http://natomessageboard.com/uploads/00005036/Cyl3.JPG
This is the #3 exhaust valve? Please help. Need to know what are possible causes before head is ready to go back on. The car has 295,000 on it if that helps any.

Jarron, these engines are not interference engines so it couldve been debris in the cyl bore, bad detonation, fluid in the cyl, anything. Important thing is the cyl bores are clean and the head is redone correctly and you should be ok.

Running lean, which makes exhaust temp very high, severe detonation caused by too much boost, low octane gas, timing issues, or running lean.

I chipped a valve under hard detonation. With that kind if mileage I'd have the injectors cleaned and flowed to make sure it wasn't fuel related

Off comes the injectors then. What is "interference" engine? By the way, thanks guys

jarron.. like the word says " interference " i.e. obstruction. on some engines the valves open so close to the pistons that if the timing belt breaks it can cause the piston to hit the valves and cause damage ( interference )
luckily our engines are not that way Smile

"Interference" refers to the possibility of the valves coming in contact with the tops of the pistons in an event such as the timing belt letting loose and everything spinning wildly. In our engines, the valves and pistons will never touch when either is spun freely, thus "non interference".

Crap, dp beat me to it. Big Grin

RRs are pretty cheap, especially if you pull it yourself from the junkyard. I just bought one from RDOG with all followers for $85 shipped, seemed to be a little lower than the average setup from eBay.

The cam swap is easy on these motors, especially with the head pulled.

On a personal note, I really like how the roller smoothed the idle. Also seems to make the motor more torquey lower in the RPM range.

Good luck!
