cutting out EGR system

what would happen if i cut out all the EGR tubes and simply plugged them up? would this mess up the computer or make it run incorrectly? I saw a guy at the track without any of his and i wonder what all has to be done to make the car run right after this happens.

Why not just pull the vac line off it and plug it? This would eliminate the egr set up and still be made functional for emissions testing.

so the basic purpose of the EGR system is for emissions testing? does it restrict the flowing capabilities? i don't see why else he would have done that.

The egr recirculates some exhaust gas back into the intake tract. This will help emissions and bring hot air into the intake. The second thing is why it was bypassed on that car at the track. If you just pull the vacume line off(plug the vac line) it it will not open to allow the hot air into the intake thus bypassing it wihtout removing it. You will need it for emissions testing.

According to my book
"How to Understand, Service, and Modify Ford Fuel Injection & Electronic Engine Control"

It has an article in the tuning for performance and economy section, "Remove Egr??"

It says, The engine-control shuts off EGR under high performance conditions, also at idle, and cold operation.

The rate of fuel injected and the spark advance are calculated for the EGR under part-throttle conditions. If you block off the EGR, you stand of good chance of experiencing knock and wasting fuel. You might even reduce your power output, aswell as dirting the air.

Whether or not that is 100% true....i don;t know. But, you can make the above assumption yourself.

Hope this helps

so the egr actually helps the system run better? i don't understand how you could experience knock AND waist fuel though. I guess i'll forget about the whole thing and keep my current EGR equiptment on.

Hm. Well, when I put the longtube header on my '90 LX, it had no provisions for the EGR so I just took the pipe off it, removed the gasket, replced it with a sheetmetal plate I made to block it off, and left it plugged in. Hasn't caused me any problems...

This is definitely one of those YMMV type mods. If you do a search on Turboford.org, you will see that many people have differing opinions on this one. For the most part, if you remove it, you will eventually notice slight pinging at part throttle at least sometiem in the future. Ambient temps, fuel quality, ignition timeing, carbon build-up in the cylinder, etcc... will all play a role.

EGR valve is closed at WOT, and has NO effect on WOT performance. I personally see no reason to remove it. If you live in an emissions area that measures NOx emissions, you will likely flunk the test without an EGR system.
