Cracked Dash Pad Replacement

Rookie Poster with probably an "Old" question - for NATO vets but a "New" question for me

I have the dreaded "Split / Cracked 1988 TC Dash Pad - Not repairable via any liquids, preservatives or cosmetic methods - Short of Plastic Surgery - in the literal sense.

It is all that stands between us and a perfectly "Mint" As Delivered interior. Which is the goal my son and I have set for this phase of our project.

I had seen a "CAP" over layment piece advertised several years ago.

Is this "CAP" available ?

Has any NATO member ever tried it ??

Is this a viable option ?

Again just looking for any possible education or Info on the subject.

Dash cap makes them and they are sold on eBay also. Many have used them with great results. I believe a search will net many results and I think there is a whole rite up on it with pics

Here is a three year old thread with before and after pictures! I personally haven't had any experience with them yet, but every time I see a thread about them it is always good reviews.

I used one in my '87, 'JR'. Your results will be equal to or exceed the care you take in the installation. In a word mine came out excellent.

turbot79 & T-BirdX3:

Gentlemen:

Thank you very much for the information and the links.

Fortunately our 1988 TC dash is in nothing like the "surface of the moon" condition of the example in the link pictures, A long and 1/4 inch wide crack is what we have. Which is what my son and I want to replace ASAP. Prior to "Cruise Night and Local Show Season.

Again on behalf of my son and myself thank you both very, very much. Hopefully we can make the repair then post some of our own "Before and After" shots for all to see.

That is great to hear.

We are as a rule pretty picky and tend to adhere to using the correct OEM components ( NOS or Quality Reproduction items )and details with restoration components used on our car.

That said we always know that when something is out of our area of capability we are not afraid to seek advice, or even help as may be necessary, from experts to get the best results possible.

Many thanks for your input and experience on the Dash Pad inquiry.

I'm pulling out the dash pad of another vehical I have. I'm going to either repair it myself or have it repaired / recovered. I can say this, the dash does not come out with the greatest of ease. I will post some pictures when its out.

Polyvance makes a kit to repair the dashes, however if you have brittle plastic in other areas of dash its just a time bomb waiting to go off. One or two cracks, not so bad, but when you have many cracks and brittle vinyl it might be a tough undertaking.
