I am checking out the systems on my 1988 TC. Today I noticed that the larger cooling fan was running but the smaller one on the driver's side that runs in conjunction with the a/c was not running when the a/c was turned on. I followed the test procedures in the tech article and the fan runs when the connector off the pressure switch is jumpered. The tech article says that the fan is controlled by the EEC through the IRCM. My question: is the fan supposed to run any time the a/c is on or is it dependent on temperature of the coolant as well?

IIRC, there are 2 conds when th secondary fan will run.
One being when the coolant exceeds a predetermined temp, the other when the pressure in the A/C system exceeds a certain level.
Someone here knows the values I'm sure.

Second fan parameters are: (1) the coolant temperature is >= 220°; (2) the AC fluid pressure exceeds a preset level. The primary fan should run whenever the AC compressor does.
HTH.
BTW 350psi sticks in my mind but that seems awfully high so it's probably not right.

Thanks for the responses. I presume that the secondary fan system is ok as it was only in the 70s today and the coolant was probably not all that hot.

I would think so, especially since it turns on ok when you jumper the pressure switch.
