Coil question

I removed the wire from the coil to the distributor at both ends. I turned the key to start and there was a really big, really blue spark from the coil post to the first connector toward the back of the car.

Is that normal?

PS...the engine did start after I put the wire from the coil to the distributor back and it sounded pretty good.

No, not normal.

Did you use dielectric grease in the coil wire boot? Is the top of the coil filthy / greasy?

There is dielectric grease, but the wire to the distributor wasn't on the coil, just a bare post. Sounds odd...but I didn't pay attention to see if it was greasy, I assume that means a leak of some kind?

It now cranks and runs better than ever. I'm going to let it idle for a while tomorrow so I can check for leaks and adjust the timing.

I also noticed that the PO had run both fans on what looks like 16 ga wire spliced to one of the fan wires on the IRCM. I paid attention to it because I touched it and it was HOT!

Anyway, going to check every ground and connection I can find while I'm performing surgery on this vehicle!

Damp grimy grease can somewhat conduct high voltage. I would ignore what happened and chalk it up to a one time WTF occurance.
