Codes

I had the tranny rebuilt and the shop ran the codes and I could use some help as to what needs to be done. I did a search and found that 25 and 34 are no problem, here are the rest: 42, 81, 84 & 85. Thanks... Chuck

It could make a difference as to what codes came from which part of the test - KOEO, CM OR KOER.

Code 42 the 02 is seeing a rich condition.
see http://www.turbotbird.com/techinfo/CamTi...Timing.htm
Also could be too much fuel pressure, leaky injectors or a TPS problem.

81 could be an circuit failure in the IAC or Boost control. Do you have the stock BCS unplugged electrically?

84 EGR solenoid circuit failure

85 Adaptive lean limit reached by the ECA in the fuel control program. Find and fix the cause of the code 42 and this one will probably go away.

Is this an 87/88 with the a4ld automatic? If so, i'm pretty sure code 85 is the overdrive and clutch converter circuit controls.

Could that code 42 just be a bad O2 sensor?
I don't remember if I disconnected the BCS lead, I did install a manual boost control. Also, the car gets lousy mileage if thats any hint. The EGR selonoid circuit failure, is there a fix or just replace the EGR valve? Thanks... Chuck

The
EGR solenoid is on the back side of the passenger strut tower. Just follow the vacuum line from the EGR valve. Maybe the electrical connector to it just needs cleaned.

A code 42 by itself (no code 41 also)probably means thhe 02 is not defective. More likely something else is causing the engine to run rich which would fit with bad mielage.

Is this an 87/88 TC?

i just checked and the code 85 is for the clutch converter lockup and 3/4 overdrive controls. Of course, to make sure, it depends on the section this code can from (Key On Engine Off?)

What was done to the transmission? The 85 code might be an old code that is no longer valid.

As far as the Code 42, it depends on if it was in the Continuous Memory section, or in the Key On Engine Running section, as to how to correctly troubleshoot it as they focus on different areas. Both mean a rich condition, however, they focus on different areas as the reason for that rich condition report.

If you don't know, i would do as Pete suggested in his links. i'd check the fuel pressure to ensure that it is not too high. If fuel pressure is OK, then check to ensure that the system can hold fuel pressure. This will help determine if there is an internal leaking (stuck) injector(s) causing too much fuel to be delivered into the cylinder(s) resulting in a rich condition. If fuel pressure holds, then it is possible the Vane Air Meter is reporting more airflow than there actually is, thereby, throwing off the inital fuel ratio.

Once you get to those points, i'm sure that we can help. It would help us, and yourself, if you could first find out if your Code 42 was a Key On Engine Running code, or a Continuous memory code.
