Chips & rust

I've got chipped paint and some rust starting on the body by the lower corner of the doors. The back edge of the doors, not front. How do you guys stop that? I've looked at 3 or 4 other TCs around town, and they are all chipped there, too.

Mud flaps help keep rocks from being kicked up and chipping the paint. Rust is hard to stop, but if it's just surface rust, you have a much better chance.

Remove as much of the rust as possible, a sandblaster works well. Then spray the remaining rust with Extend or another rust neutralizer (there are several brands out there, they all claim to convert and stop rust). When the rust turns Black, the stuff is working. Then spray it with Chip Guard (I think it's made by Dupont) to help avoid getting chips in the new paint.

If you dont want rust to EVER come back, use POR15. It is pricy, but it works. Check out their site, www.por15.com .

Jeff, I did not see a price on the website. What does that run? Do I use this and then primer the rest for a new paint job?
I just want my Bird back!

There are prices on the por15 site... I order stuff thru the site -- look again.

You have to follow their directions exactly... clean / degrease the area, use their metal etch, and then apply 2 coats of por 15 paint. I have used their tie coat primer over the por15 paint, and then painted the finish coat over that primer, and I have also just used regular primer over the por15 paint (after roughing it up with 220 grit), and it works both ways. I have done both pretty small and rather large areas with por15. Be careful with it, as it will stick very well to EVERYTHING it gets on, and once it hardens, it WILL NOT come off! I have some drip spots on my driveway from like 5 years ago, and they are still there, and look "like new". If you get it on your hands, brake cleaner takes it off, but it will leave your hands black (the color I usually use) for a long time until the discolored skin flakes off and gets replaced with new skin. I have spent many a summer with discolored hands.
