Didn't notice it from the engine compartment. It was covered by a steel plate that almost looked factory! Once I dropped the heater box to change the core I noticed, something was incorrect.
THIS IS JUST..................WRONG!!

Apparently, to the previous owner, that's the proper way to change the heater core! He probably did that at the same time he removed the head to repair the 2 grand canyon size cracks.
On the bright side (if there is one), I've got a relatively new FORD heater core!

Did the PO have a persistent drooling problem? Perhps a rather blank look in the eyes, evidence of slackness in the jaws and knuckles that scraped the ground? Perhaps his claim to fame was the lead in Texas Chainsaw Massacre?

I see this as a great opportunity....
To purchase tools.
Got MIG ?
Words just dont cover that approach to any repair. (Although I have to admit thinking about it once or twice.... I put down the sledge/hacksaw/torch before major damage occured)

The firewall contributtes to the structural integrity of the car. You might consider welding that back. It's kinda like hacking out the roof to install an aftermarket sunroof. Just my .02

From my previous experiance in cutting the fire wall to remove the heater core a much better job could have been done. As everyone says that is one heck of a hack job I have a picture for you though check this out:

Even though I but the metel back in you could still see the cut sinc eI used a 1/16 cut off wheel on my grinder.
That isnt finished I still have some polishing todo and Im putting a windlace around the edge to clean it up. It is basiclly a steel coated in plastic used in the older cars and it goes around edges real nice. I thought about screwing it on but I think im gonna put rubber bumpers on the back and then use the core hsoe clamps to hold it on.
