Most of the time it seems as though people either just leave it unhooked (which is what I did) or take it out and either leave the vent hose from the tank hanging or plumb it back into the intake before the VAM. I'm assuming that since you're in CA they probably still check for it, though? Only thing I could think of would be, if you have the room for it, to cut a 3 or 4 inch long piece of pvc to go in between the Air Filter and the VAM and attach a barbed fitting coming out the side of it to hook the hose from the canister up to. I don't know if you would have the room for that or not. I wouldn't... my cone filter already bumps up against the front of the engine bay.

Might be able to put the barbed fitting in the K&N betwwen the filter part, in the tube ahead of where it fits on the inlet of the VAM. Just guessing on this.

^^^^^ Thats what I did. My intake is made of PVC pipe from VAM to the K&N. I just put a 1" PVC pipe nipple into the 3" pipe from VAM to K&N. Put it in so I could reuse the original cannister hose. No pics. SOrry.

so funny i found this post today....i was wondering the same...i just left the top vent open also and smell bad gas on a regular basis.....i used a spectra short air filter that is partialy open in front of the cone with a flat metal spot in the center. i'm planning on drilling and epoxying a 5/8 or 1/2(dont remember size) hose barb in the center to hook the hose to canister....my 2 cents

i did my conversion today.....took next to no parts or real money to complete....
1. 3/8" hose barb with 3/8" male pipe thread
1. 3/8" hose barb with 1/4" male pipe thread
2 feet of H10006 3/8" weatherhead hose ( u could use regular fuel line but it does not bend as well as the braided)
1. tube of permatex ultra black rtv or 3m 5200.either will work i used what i had.

Put sealer on 3/8" pipe fitting and screw into top open port of fuel evaporator box. drill out front of air filter steel or rubber cap to 33/64". Put sealer on 1/4" thread hose barb and screw into air filter. Let sealer dry 15-20min re install air filter on car and connect both hose barbs with fuel line and ur done....NO MORE FUEL SMELL and your evap system works as the factory intended.
