So I have done countless self installation of CD players, pretty simple, hot acc ground, then left right rear front channels. Done many with the cheap little walmart "install adapters" and direct wiring. I was installing today in my 88 TC with the premium and sound and ran into a pickle, only 3 wires come out of the adapter to send the "sound" data into the equilizer. I would like to take out completely the equilizer and indash cassette player and just install direct the new cd-player. Am I in over my head on this one fellas? Help?

Well, yes, without a wiring diagram. With premium sound the front speakers are fed from the back of the car. Only three wires carry sound to the equalizer. The other wires are for power, illumination, and to turn on the equalizer and amplifier in the trunk. The sound wires to the equalizer are as follows:
Right channel PK/BK
Left " PK/LG
Common BK/W
1987 TC stock except ATR 2.5"
1983 Pontiac Transam T-top 5.7 T56 [email protected] top speed: 176mph
1978 Fairmont 2.3 4-spd Big-top S/W
1946 Willys CJ2A 134.2ci L4 No-top

Yup, got the wiring diagram, and no I didnt know the sound was fed from the back of the car from an amplifer :S. My next question is, is there a way to bypass all this and install a CD player with little headache or is some extensive rewiring going to be involved?
Hmm?

On my 88 I found a separate plug buried under the dash for the non premium/amplifier sound option. If you look at the wiring diagram, each speaker connector has 2 positives and 2 negatives. One set of wires comes from the EQ, the other set comes direct from this plug I found. So when I installed my Pioneer I used the 2nd found plug and unplugged the amp in the trunk. Then the only thing I had to run was the RCA cables for sub-out to the sub amp in the trunk.
Note: I did not have the factory eq though.

You can do what Matt said, but you'll loose the use of the equalizer; there is no easy way to retain it when installing a new head unit.
Besides it's pretty much a sure thing that a modern head will have better equalization options and amps than our TC's came with new, anyway.

Thanks fellas one final question, is there an easier way to access the amplifer? It appears Im going to have to crawl in the trunk to unhook the panel holding it up. If not its time to get upside down and dirty, thanks again fellas for the info, Im glad to be here .
EDIT: Cancel found an easier way(didnt realise the panel folded down lol) CD-player works great
