After some investigating into a very annoying rattling sound, I found that the heat shield on the cat was rusted away near where it bolts up to the cat. Its the bottom heat shield.
Can I remove that bottom half? Or would it set the road on fire? Is there anything I can do to get rid of the rattling sound short of replacing the cat?

Some people take them off, some put big hose clamps around them

Those shields are there for a reason. Cats run VERY hot, as high as 600-700 deg F under some situations. Use a large hose clamp or 2, or string a few smaller ones together to make one big one.

haha this reminds me a firehouse story. back in the day we had an old engine got dispatched for a field fire on one of the farms thats now a section of levittown. anyway trucks out there in the field ona hot dry day and all the sudden the low exhuast caught the field on fire underneath the truck all the while members are throwing corn in the compartments. they put the fire out go back to the station and the chief asks a member to get something when he opens the compartment all this corn on the cob comes rolling out. this was late 50's.
with that said my shield was rattling and I ripped it off. but with the knowledge of replacing the exhaust in the near future.
