Cars eating distributors

ok well about a week ago I was going down the road and the car just shut off on me like it did about 3 months back, so I preety much knew it was the same problem as before when the distributor went bad. So I replaced the distributor and the car runs fine, for some reason it was also causing my detonation problems which are now gone. My question is what would cause distributors to keep going bad in my car. This is the 3rd distributor I've put in the car in 3 months, and I wanna know whats up. On another note my car runs fine when started but after about 2 min. of driving it starts to buck and jerk and idle bad for about 5 min, then after 5 min the car runs fine and will continue to run fine for the rest of the day. Are these problems related?

Ok, by teh dis going bad what do you mean. is the gear on the end of teh dist getting chewed down to nothing? OR is it just not getting spark? I dont think the idleing is part of this. If tyhe gear is getting chewed off at the end of the dist shaft it is most likely the cam shaft is bad is what i was told a while ago. MY car did the same thign repetedly. It would stop because the gear on the end would get chewed off or the oil pump would seize. I cant rember exactly what but the dist gear would get screwed and oil pumop would break and the dist gear stops the spark deadly circle. If you can understand the brain fart i just sploged on there or pete might be able to. the info is there just not organized i am tired and goign to bed ..... bye.

If it's eating distributor gears it may be because 1. too much end or side play in the distributor shaft. 2. worn aux shaft bearings or bad auxillary shaft gear. The aux shaft gear drives the dist gear. 3. Oil pump binding up because particles are trying to pass through it, causing it to bind. The first time it happened the particles may have come from the cam or some other kind of wear. After that you have the added particles that were formerly part of the dist or aux shaft gears. Sometimes the shaft that drives the oil bump breaks when it binds

It's going to continue to eat gears until all of the following are dealt with.
1 the cause of the original dist gear failure is fixed. 2. the system is cleaned out, 3. new oil pump, 4. any abnormal wear in the dist or aux shaft and bearings is diagnosed and fixed.

Note. A lot of slop in the dist shaft or the aux and dist gears could allow enough variation in timing to cause detonation.

You will have to deal with this before moving onto the other problems with running

Mine has done the same thing before. Check the thrust plate at the front of the aux shaft. It only has two bolts that hold it down, and they might have backed out.

unfortunately it isnt eating the distributor gears. I just stop getting spark so it makes me think its something electrical thats causing it like a shortage or something.

After three distributors, there is a chance it might be something else. Have you pulled the codes? Have you tried the wiggle test on the hearness to the distributor or taken a good look at the igniton switch and related connector and wiring?

Honestly I've never understood quite how to pull the codes, even after reading the tech articles over and over again. so I always have someone do it for me. I just had it done like 2 weeks ago and I forgot what codes he said came up. I guess I can call him up and ask but right now I dont really remember, although I think he said something about Mass Air Flow or something to that nature. Anyway I guess I'll take a look at the wiring tomm. but I've never been really good with that hopefully I'll find something tho.

There is no mass air meter on the turbo coupe. It's vane air.
