Carlisle 2020

After much soul searching, I have decided that I will not be attending Carlisle 2020.  The COVID-19 risk with my nearly 2000 mile round trip with multiple motel stays, stops for food and fuel, etc just isnt worth it.  In  addition to that, our 11 year old dog is having some health issues (the poor little guy spent last night in the local animal ER) and I want to be around for him.  He is as much a member of our family as our daughter, son in law, and grandson.

If the fall Dayton picnic is held this year, I will try my best to make the picnic.

I hope everyone stays safe and healthy.

I've also been wrestling about going.  Had a lung infection in Jan. and still iffy.  Still having my property in York puts me close to Carlisle but haven't made a final decision.  This may also be Wyatte's last chance to go.  He'll be 14 in Jun. and he's going down the other side of the hill.  Jeff, hope your pup gets straightened out, they have a great reserve.  If I don't see all of you there, enjoy and stay safe.  Considering how things are going they may not even have it.  Stay safe all!

Thanks for to good wishes for our "pup", Fred. He is doing better, but only time will tell. He is in the early stages of heart failure, and is on 2 different pills twice a day plus, of course, regular vet visits.

I really struggled with the decision to skip Carlisle this year, but considering the multiple possible COVID19 exposures over a 2000 mile round trip, plus being in the higher risk age group, I believe I made the right decision.

Sadly this is all a part of the “new normal”.

On Thursday my wife and I drove to Las Vegas to pick up some rims I just bought off eBay. While I’ve been there probably a hundred times for various work over the past 30 years, my wife has never seen it. Well, I picked a great time to show it to her.

As I’m sure is true with most all of the rest of the US, the casinos were all closed, and the Las Vegas Strip was eerily empty. To make things even more odd, the sidewalks had yellow police tape strung along them, and police cars were found sitting with their lights on in the middle of the left side of every city block there. They do NOT want you walking anywhere near them. The seller I bought the rims from said that while you’re free to walk around most anywhere else in Vegas, that’s certainly not true there.

”Take a lot of pictures, because you’ll never see anything like this again.”

It was frighteningly like a scene from a science fiction film—but real.

All told I drove 641 miles in about 13 hours, as Vegas is about 4 1/2 to 5 hours away. I debated on whether it would be worth it, from a health and economic standpoint. My wife had already said she did not want to stay overnight due to the virus; we were careful to practice lots of social distancing and used lots of hand cleaner and washed our hands in our interactions with service station bathrooms, etc.

My existing rims are OEM design but are also chromed, and are badly pitted within the bead surface due to me putting Slime additive in them in the mid 1990s, before I learned that Slime and aluminum don’t work or play well together. I gradually lose air in all but one (which was purchased new after I hit a curb), so I’ve been looking for affordable replacements for a while now. I say “affordable” because it’s not usually the rims that are expensive, but the shipping. The eBay purchase offered Local Pickup Only, and as my wife had never seen Vegas (although we had often talked about it), it seemed like a good idea. While the $$ I spent on gas driving there and back probably offsets what I would have paid someone else to ship them, we had a great road trip and we both got to have a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

I cleaned them up today, and the bead surfaces are just about perfect. The exterior faces of the rims have me stumped—it’s as if they were sprayed with polyurethane or something. My existing rims have chrome facings, but the interior surfaces don’t look anything like these. I’ve not had any experience with snowflake rims, so I don’t know much about them.

But considering everything I’m very happy and pleased with my decision.

For those not on the Carlisle mailing list.  They have just announced that Ford Natls. will be moved from Jun 5 - 7 to the new date of Jul 31 - Aug 2nd..  Perhaps this will help those of us that were reluctant to go
and give those that the Jun date didn't work for, to make it in Jul/Aug..  Guess we have 8 -10 weeks to decide.  Stay safe.  Fred

Thanks for the heads up, Fred!

Hope this COVID19 thing will be on its way out by then. Hopefully we will be able to make it!

Looks like Carlisle 2020 is once again a go for us!!! I remade motel reservations for Carlisle last night. For anyone planning to go, make reservations ASAP, as a significant number of motels in the Carlisle area I checked are already fully booked.

I'm on the fence as to whether or not I'll make it out. If I do go, it's unlikely that I'll bring the turbo coupe...

I can't stand the heat so I'm leaning more towards no than yes...I guess we'll see!

I think it would be great to get to, I've never been.
I looked it up and it's less than 500 miles from me. It's also near a couple places I planned to visit with my daughter. We were trying to decide for march break whether there or Montreal. With all that's happened I sure am glad we chose Montreal.
If not this year then maybe next I'll come. I dont know how impressed my daughter would be but she's pretty easy going. Probably wouldn't stick around for more than a day though. She wants to go to the Hershey place and a couple other spots we heard about.

Rob H. I'm told the Halifax hasn't had a case of Corona-19 in over 2 weeks and no deaths yet.

I already decided I'll pass on Carlisle this year. I'll miss seeing everyone for a second year running but I seriously doubt that there will be a vaccine or even a medicinal cure this year. I hope that those that are going have a safe trip and a great show.
