Hey Guys. I have my first Bird, 1987 Whiute Turbo Coupe witha 5 speed. I have only been getting 10psi of boost. The BCS was recently replaced, and I have taken the switch apart and cleaned it. The light on the switch lights up now, before it didn't. I am still not getting 15psi in any gear. Any thoughts?

How much are you getting by gear and at what rpm.. The boost gauge is not known for accuracy. Also in the lower gears, the engine may not load up enough to reach 15 psi in 1st & 2nd. An 87 only gets 15, at most, in 1 & 2.

Also are you sure the intercooler hoses are good, not cracked. Also in the proper position and properly positioned clamps.

hose clamps on innercooler are good. no cracked hoses. It only boost 10psi, by abouut 3000rpm. and at about 5000 it falls off to 8. I am slo getting a stutter, and or miss about 4500 with a sudden loss of power.

The 87-early 88 are programmed for only 10 psi in the top 3 gears, manual trans. Late build 88s got 15 in all gears but only after 4K rpms.

If you are developing a stutter/miss, that is going to have a big effect on boost. How old is the tuneup and what brand of plugs and wires are you using?

would a june 1988 build be considered "late" ?

and a gillis would allow max boost at lower than 4000 rpm, right?

bhazard, not sure when the change over date was for 15 psi in all gears.

Yes a gillis will get around the factory limitations.

Took the car on the freeway,. Car now boosts 15 in 4th gear, not 5th., Will boost 15 in 1st 2nd and 3rd in city. I am using motorcraft wires and Autolite Plugs. Stock oe replacemnet plugs. The wires and plugs are 6 months old.

And in other news...my car is SUPER hard to put in 1st gear now, and hard to go into 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th. It jsut started today after teh car started boosting to 15. I checked teh clutch resevoir, its fin. No visual leaks, but have a mysterious new rattle from cowl area. Any ideas?

Check the mocement of the rod in the clutch slave cylinder when the clutch pedal is depressed to the floor. The rod should move at least 0.53" in moving the clutch fork.

Sometimes changing the trans fluid will improve shifting. Use Dexron II or III ATF

Ok. I got the boosting situation all taken care of. I checked the throw of teh slave cylinder, it was fine. I was driving home today, adn apparently all teh rattle and hard shifting I was feeling, was my clucth. It blew on me today. I need to know if anyone has had experience with teh Hays Clutch kit from Advanced Auto Parts. Its only 125 for a kit with throwout bearring, pilot bearing, disc, and pressure plate. Any thoughts????
