Car randomly cuting out

I just posted earllier about gages and climate control not working, and have since fixed that with a new ignition switch. I was hoping that it would fix this problem too, but no.

The car will hick-up every once in a while while going down the road with no rhyme or reason. This has been going on for about 7-8 years, but it has never stopped me from going any where or getting to the destination. But it is getting to be that it happens every time I make a trip now.

When going down the road it just kills the motor, but if you leave it in gear, it will jump back to running, then back to off, then back, then off... till it stops and runs normally. Nothing else turns off. Most of the time this will only last for about 5-10 seconds, but has been this way before starting the car, and you have to wait till it calms down. It seem that there is a ticking noise coming from somewhere, but was never able to pinpoint it. I think it was soming under the hood near the air filter, but don't know. There has never been anything that I have found to set this off. No bumps in the road, standing on the gas, switch position, rpm leavels...

Really would like to get this fixed, the wife doesn't trust it any more, and you know what that means.

Thanks.

This now happened at a stop light with the wife in the car. Needless to say, she wasn't very impressed. Any suggestions

i've never experienced that in my TC but in some of my other fords it was usually the ignition module...

I do not have a code reader, but am thinking that I really need to get one.

I had that with my TC. It was the TFI. If it is, it's only going to get worse.

Look in the tech Articles for how to pull codes in the car (no code reeder needed) I agree that this is the place to start.

The car has just gone into an undrivable state. The way home it has gone into an iregular idle more offten. In the jerking of the idle going back and forth I am guessing something must have hapen to the heater core. All my windows foged up in real quick and there was a sweet smell of antifreeze. I am no longer sure it is worth keeping the car on the road. Is there any articals on changing the heater core?

Heater core replacement is in the tech articles under heating/cooling. Good luck.

Well, the article describing how to change the heater core is really good, saved this TC's life. It took me most of today to get it done, but saved lots of $$$$. The replacement ended up costing about $70 (all new hoses and clamps going to and coming from the core). I replaced the spark plugs and wires at the same time since I had the inner cooler off. Seems to work good again, so now I will be getting back to the cutting out problem.

You mentioned a ticking noise over near the air filter. That sounds like you have a bad IRCM unit.
