So i posted a wanted ad in the classifieds for a t3. couple questions since i am a big wimp and hate doing things over again. my questions are bottom end w/ 190,000 miles can it handle the more power from the t3? the head is rebuilt and is in good shape so imnot to worried about blowing the HG again but if i bolt this thing on and run 18 psi would it be a waste to upgrade from my IHI? I think im gonna do a compression test 2 see where each cylinder stands if they look good then i wont worry as much.

The 83 through 86s came with a T3. A T3 isn't going to kill a good bottom end

didnt think about it that way lol. would it be a waste to run 18 psi with the t3 from the IHI at 18?

If it was a waste, why do so many people do it, self included? 18 w/ a T3 is different than 18 w/ an IHI

Take a Compression test & get an mechanical oil Pressure gauge to see what the numbers on & verify the bottem end. The bottom ends on the 2.3 are real strong & I agree with Pete that the T3 is the way to go & with 198K, she still has alot of life left in her.

i thought i read over at turboford that it was a 50 hp gain from the ihi to t3 at 18 psi. i mean it isnt a super huge amount but baby steps is the way togo.

How much you gain depends on what you have done so far. Given the mutitude of different combinations of mods possible, giving a flat amount of gain is extremely short sighted. Remeber that people have added intercoolers to the 83-86 and made big increases by turning up the boost.

You could easily see gains in the 25 to 50 range depending on where you are starting and how much boost you run

Nobody gained 50hp at the same boost level of 18psi. There may have been a few horse power gained due to a slightly denser air charge. What you gain is the potential to run the T3 up to 25psi. Then, you're talking a 50hp gain.

but i have more reliability running 18 psi or above with a t3 then the IHI. i thought the limit in boost of a t3 is around 24 psi?

I have yet to install my T3, but from what I read the T3 will not run out of breathe in the high rpm range like the smaller IHI. If you have an aggressive cam, the T3 is the way to go.
