They total these things pretty easy. When I got rear ended, damage had to be under something like $2100, (and this was about 2 years ago) and they only pay 80% of that. Funny thing is, I got a check from the other guys insurance for about $1850 for a rear bumper cover and tail pipe tip. I found a bumper cover (even the same color, no paint) for under $100 and still haven't changed the tip. I brought all the receipts I had (over $6000) and the adjuster basically said, "well, It's assumed that the car has paint, wheels, tires,etc..." so it was a pretty short conversation. I was happy with what I got, so I didn't push the issue. Just didn't want it totaled over a bumper cover. Was it the other guys fault? That would be a BIG help. Good luck.

Chip, sorry to see that. Get all the receipts together and argue for more money. They will probably want to total it. Take the money and get it fixed. There are a few past pots on how to deal with the insurance companies

Heres the skinny. The guy hit him and it was the guys fault. My son dint have insurance, so I know that will come into play with the claim. I cant stand insurance companies, especially when dealing with someone elses who needs to pay out. My son doesnt live with me, so he does what he wants to, and I can only give him advice. I told him he needed insurance on it, but I cant force him to get it. He chose to drive without insurance and it may cost him. I hope not. Live and Learn.

i know this isn't going to be popular.....sorry to be so blunt......but, your son needs to get off the road. if he can't afford insurance, he can't afford to own a car. if i was the insurance adjuster, i wouldn't give him a dime. by helping him put an uninsured car on the road , you are an enabler.

I understand your opinion, and honeslty I agree that he shouldnt be driving it. However he lives with his mother who also drives without insurance. His mother and I were at war so much that I backed off (she had a killer attorney and rich family) and gave her all parential rights. I just recently re-established my presents after a 6 year hiatus. He is at the age in which he has to make choices, and I cant force him to do anything. I dont agree that I am enabling him, I do agree that he has made a bad choice and as a man he will learn from it. Again, live and learn.

Actually, when I got hit and it was the other guys fault, My insurance never even came up. If it was 100% the other guys fault, as was the case with me as I was standing still and got rearended, it may not be an issue. If it was partially your sons fault, it may be another story. Were the cops involved at the scene? Did he get any tickets?

No cops. The guy gave his information and left. His uncle is a cop and is folowing up on the guy, so it should be a easy one

You should be ok. The other guys insurance should pay off. Take what you can get without totaling it. Up here, you can't buy the car back. It's either take what they give you or total it. When I got rearended in my '91 Mustang (Yes, I did have a bullseye on the rear bumper of that car too, lol) There were a few things I couldn't get paid for, mainly fixing the driver seat and the cracked plastic cover in the back, as it would have put the damage over the top. That car was hit harder. Wrinkled the quarter panel, busted taillight, bumper cover was pretty much what they paid to fix. If I wanted to keep the car, I was on my own for the rest. Like I said before, they didn't care that the car was recently painted and all the money I put into it. You have REAL body work issues. When I got hit in the TC and got that check for about $1850, it probably cost me less than $150 to fix it. The insurance guys look up spanky brand new parts. I think a NEW bumper cover was like $800, then paint, install, etc. I think I bought the cover from a guy on this site. I don't know what it would cost to have the quarter done, but the door is no biggie, just replace the whole thing. You'll probably get enough to fix it back up.
