I noticed a small ammount of oil that was "sprayed" on the hose to my BPV. Now that the problem has been narrowed down to the cam seal it needs to be replaced. I have one but was lazy when I did the cam swap. Does the cam have to come back out to replace the seal ? or can I just pry it out and tap the new one in?

You can change the seal with the cam in place. I always put the seal in after the cam goes in to prevent damage.

Another thought, you sure you have the bolt holding the cam sprocket sealed? It will leak, and is pretty easy to pull out, apply teflon tape and seal it back up. The bolt leaking (rotating part)is more likely to sling oil than the can seal (stationary).

ARGH!!! Bob beat me this time!!!ARGH!!! [Image: biggrin.gif] [Image: biggrin.gif] [Image: biggrin.gif] Yes the seal can be replaced with the cam in place...!!!CAUTION!!! Before you remove the old seal make SURE you have removed the dirt and debris from around the cam and seal...once old seal is removed...CLEAN AGAIN!!! Installing new seal...as you push new seal in place slowly turn/twist it so the "lip" doesn't roll over and cause a leak then tap it in and reassemble...

Sounds like a problem I am having. Not on my bpv tho, I dont even have one. lol, but Oil has been slung on to my upper radiator hose, and bottom of my hood. It seems like when I come to an abrupt stop, she smokes more noteably (sp?) . Maybe like the oil runs to the front of the head and gets slung out. Perhaps?
88 tc 5sp, Gillis, K&N on vam, Redneck cat back exaust (nothing from the cat back) 220,000 mile short block. Rebuilt 86 head and cam.

I think my cam seal might be ok. I get some blow by at 20psi of boost. Oil gets out of the oil fill, I think it might be from that ? If it were the cam seal would it be a constant drip of oil. Between the valve seals going, front and rear mains slightly leaking, the car has never been low on oil. So whatever it is leaking the ammount of oil being lost is very minimal.

Charles,

Oil leaking from the cam seal likes to find its way onto the exhaust manifold.

Just noticed this, the backing plate behind the cam gear is wet in the front and not the rear. With out sealant on the cam bolt, would the oil come out of the rear of the cam gear, or out the front near the bolt ?
