I'm constantly reminded that you get what you pay for.

I picked up a set of 3 Torx bits so I could get the T-45 for my caliper pins ($2.99 + tax). Well I sheared the end of that thing off on the first one. My questions are: (1) Should I get the $4 individual bit from Advance Auto, NAPA, Home Depot, etc. (DUHHH!!)?; (2) Can anyone out there recommend a better tool source?; and (3) Do the caliper pins have a tendancy to seize? Also, what are some good pointers/do's and don'ts for pad replacement?

The rear pins are known to sieze. I don't believe the fronts are.

I agree with Jeff! My uncle had a truck that caught on fire, Sears replaced all of his burnt tools no questions asked. And they were burnt bad!

I have a box full of Husky tools, they are not the greatest. They have a lifetime guarantee tho, and the rear brake bolts/pins can be a pain to get off if they freeze. So if they break the guarantee is nice to have

I got a set of Stanley torx bits that I have put through hell. They've held up just fine & they have a lifetime warranty. I think they were $25 for a full set at Wally World.

As for the stuck pins, I just take the whole caliper slider bracket off so I can get a good grip on the pin, apply heat until it turns bright red and give it a good twist. I do this by locking the pin in a vise and twisting the bracket with pliers once its hot. It breaks them loose almost instantly and makes removal MUCH easier. After its loose, just hammer upwards at the bracket and it will pop the pin out.

I picked up a Torx bit at Sears last night and tried breaking one of the pins loose through my wheel. It turned with no problem. I'll do my breaks tonite.

Are there a lot of Torx bolts throughout the car? I didn't want to buy a whole set right from the start.

Thanks.

I don't think their are a lot of torx fittings on the car, but its nice to have them when needed.

They are mostly in the interior for the seatbelts and some dash screws.
