How many miles on the clutch? Unless it is pretty new, I would replace the the clutch disk, pressure plate, TOB, and pilot bearing as long as you have it apart.

What happened to the flywheel? Many years ago, a friends sisters car (early 70's Toyota with a 4 speed stick) that had a nasty clunk coming from the tranny / bellhousing area. We pulled the tranny, etc and found the flywheel completely cracked around the bolt circle where it attached to the crank.

Might as well change the U-joints on the driveshaft while it's out too

Most of the gears (teeth) are broken and the starter won't engage. The car has around 235k miles and I don't know if the P.O. replaced it, I bought a 82 Capri a while back and the guy gave me a clutch with a flywheel brand new but idk if it's for a srod or t5 tranny.

As with any such issue, it would be good to determine what CAUSED the flywheel teeth to break in the first place, else the new flywheel might suffer the same fate.

A poorly performing starter could be the culprit—its mounting bolts being loose could also cause it.

Unfortunately there is no way to check the alignment; you pretty much install the new flywheel, all the components (transmission etc.) and the starter, and give it a go. If it grinds, **STOP**! I would now try shimming the starter bolts one by one with a 1/4” thick steel washer. My starter was grinding 3 years ago and I could not figure out what the problem was—went through several starters, finally shimmed one of the bolts and it stopped. There’s still an underlying issue, but it’s held up for 3 years. Next time I pull out the transmission et al I will look further into it.

I always heard it was the Chevies that needed to align and shim their starters and not the Fords. I have never used a shim on any Ford starter bolt in the past 25 years, but you never know. I would suspect your starter was hanging up a little and chewed up the flywheel gears. Install a new flywheel, new starter and test it out by turning it over with no coil wire installed, that way it doesn't fire.

I have had to shim starters on GM cars, but, like Kuch, never had to shim one on a Ford.
