I accidentaly broke the plastic cover covering the "gear" at the front of the engine compartment. It looks so ugly now! I saw on some of the nicer TC's a "billet look" or chrome gear to replace this, is it involved to replace this gear? And also where can I get one?

Back in the '70s the timing covers were metal on the 2.3s. If you can find one, it could be chrome plated.

The plastic cover is still available from Ford. It's Part Number E3ZZ-6019-A (Cover Assembly). The last one I bought cost me $48.15. The earlier ones were metal but the timing mark set up was different (the degree markings were on the pulley rather than the cover). All the cover had was the pointer. You would have to swap the plastic piece off the plastic cover to the metal one and then hope that you got it in the right position.

Thanks y'all are a great bunch! All help greatly appreciated. The "gear I was talking about is the top big gear that the timing belt goes on. Any fancy gears available too?

There are various "adjustable" cam gears that allow advancing/retarding the cam timing. One of the most popular for our engines is made by Race Engineering: http://www.raceeng.com/Pages/Page_17_4cyl.html

is the cover really important in terms of protecting the timing belt?. mine broke so im just using the very bottom of it,just for setting thr timing.plus if you have an essy adjustable cam pulley or one like it and your motor is pretty clean imo it looks kinda neat.
