Just wondering, what is that thing for? I noticed that it's only a push fit into the cam cover and it has a vacuum line running to it. Could I just replace that thing with a breather?

Yes you can. I have a k&n breather cap on one of my 87tcs. It is part of the pcv system. I have had no bad effects since i put it on. Might not be smog legal if you have smog inspections though.

Just to throw in .02 more....
If you replace i with a breather, you must plug up the other end on the turbo inlet, or you will have a huge vacuum leak.
That said, I've alway just cleaned them up, and left it alone.

Any idea what size the hole is? (so that I know what diameter breather to stick on there)

The OE breather cap can be cleaned easily with carb or brake cleaner or any good degreaser. It's just a cap with wire mesh inside. Easier and cheaper than buying another breather that will have to be cleaned more often. If you just want something that looks better, sand and polish the oe cap.

No actually I want something that isn't gonna pull oil/oil fumes into the intake. Just makes a mess of the whole intake tract.

Tiny avenger has one listed on their website. That is where I got mine from. I have never had a need to clean it either. I am thinking that since it does not have a vacuum hose connected to it that there is only a fraction of the oil and vapour drawn into it. No mess on top of the valve cover from it either. If you want I can pull it off the car and measure it for you.
