Brake Lite Switch

For those of you that have to repair your brake lite switch, instead of trying to stand on your head or removing the drivers seat to gain easier access, remove the lower center trim panel (directly under the steering column). I had to repair mine again tonite (must be the fourth or fifth time....poor design). After removing the trim panel (four screws), the brake switch is right there in front of standing on your head to get to it. Easy to unplug, recrimp, and solder (which could not do before) to fix it. Wish I would have thought of this a long time ago.....

I did this back when I first got my car in November. Except I was unable to solder it. Too cold for me. So i just jammed the wire in the connector and wrapped it up with tape. I left the trim piece off because I thought I was gonna have to do it over again each time I went somewhere. Its been holding since then, but the trim piece is still off...

Good thinking, John...... maybe this should be put in the FAQ section.

Yup, bad design. I have been driving Fords with that design switch assy for over 35 years, and have yet to have to actually replace the actual switch, but I have lost count of how many times I have had to resolder the wires to the connectors due to breaking from flexing.

Just replaced mine this fall and it wasn't the switch it was the wires about an inch up from the connector. got a new new one from Ford and the world is now a beautiful place.
