Brake Lights

Yeah well I have an issue with my brake lights.. They work, but they won't light up unless you press the brake pedal really hard.. So basically they won't light up when i'm braking unless I decide to slam the brakes on.

Any ideas?

Either the brake light switch, or a broken wire at the switch connector. Rmove the connector and pull on the wires to be sure they arent broken internally (they break due to flexing). If wires are OK, replace the brake light switch (easy and cheap).

The fact that they started working after charging the battery is pure coincidence.

Scratch that last remark..

There's another issue with them.

They work fine if I press the brake pedal lightly, but if i'm braking more than lightly, they turn off after a certain point, and it's the same point every time.

My rear rotors are worn WAY beyond the replacement point (thanks to previous owner), so I have a feeling once the rotors are replaced that this will fix them..

Yes? No?

Nope.

It's either the switch or the wiring going into the switch. I've owned three Fox Cougars and all three have had issues there.
Remove the trim panel under the steering column to make things easier. Get a flashlight and inspect those parts.

The switch itself is about the size of a box of matches. You will see a spring within the assembly.
The connector should have two wires sticking out of it - I believe one is green in color - and the connector should be black in color.
Look closely at the connector and the wires. The wires have a natural flex point right where they mount into the connector (thanks, Ford), so look there for any frayed or exposed copper wire.
Try wiggling things around with the pedal depressed, and have somebody watching the back to see what the brake lights do.
You just have to get under there and inspect everything.
