Both fans aren't coming on

Well, about a month ago this started again, but I thought I had it fixed. If I sit there and idle for a couple minutes, the temp gauge goes right on up PAST the Hot mark, and NONE of the fans come on. I talked with a buddy of mine at Ford and he showed me some diagrams of 2 sensors that might be the problem. 1 is under the intake manifold, next to the FPR, it's the Cooling Temp Sensor he said. The other is on the bottom side of the lower intake manifold, he says it a Fan Control Sensor. I don't know which is the problem, or what might be messing up. The fans do work though, we tested them.

Is this an 87 or 88? If so, the Ford guy is full of shit. (A Ford mechanic who doesnt know his ass from a hole in the ground when it comes to TCs? Who would have guessed?) The fans are controlled by the EEC, which gets its temp input info from the ECT sensor, which is the sensor that sticks up between injectors 2 and 3.

Check the FAQ section for info on how to test the cooling fans.

It's an 88.

The sensor I said is next to the FPR is the one youre talking about, the ECT. The other is under the manifold and it sticks up into the bottom of the lower manifold, this is the Fan Control Relay he said. What sensors / relay have to do with the coolant temp and the fans? Where are they?

This is bull crap!!!!! First of all, not sure what sensor you mean here. There are 3 sensors in the lower intake, and none in the upper (not counting the TB as part of the upper). In the lower, there is 1) the ECT between inj. 3 & 4, and sticks straight up. 2) the knock sensor sticks out of lower part of the lower intake and points toward the firewall. 3) the ACT, which is right next to the knock sensor. There are no sensors attached to the bottom of the lower intake. Could you be refering to the sensor that has one wire to it that is screwed into the upper part of the block, above the oil filter? This is the temp sender for the temp gauge on the dash, and has NOTHING to do with the fans, EEC, or anything else other than the temp gauge.

The EEC reads coolant temp via the ECT, and the EEC sends signals to the two fan relays located in the IRCM, located on the front of the pass side strut tower.

Did you read the fan testing article in the FAQ section? It explains this stuff in more detail.

Like Jeff said, see the FAQ's Page, under the column Heat/Cool for the "Cooling Fan Test" http://www.turbotbird.com/techinfo/Cooli...ingFan.htm

You can get a visual of this by also checking out the Sensor/Device Location picture on the FAQ's page under the Engine column

In case your interested if it is the relays in the ircm can be changed if you know how to solder I have done it 4 times they are regular 12 v bosch relays you can pick them up at any alarm shop or auto parts store I have the diagram which identifies the 2 relays and you need a good soldering gun if not you still can pick up the ircm at ford for about 110.00/ only 10 for the relays
good luck

My '83 has a sensor on the lower intake with a single wire that's tied in to the fan circuit. My '85 & '87 doesn't.
